digital camera questions???

Looking to try & learn a little more into how my camera works....I want to basically slow the shutter speed down to start....Its a sony DSC-S85 digital...Seems like it takes forever to actually take the picture once I push the button, not like a normal camera where it clicks right when ya push...I was thinking on the 4th, that it would be cool to get a open shutter picture of the fireworks and have em kinda move through the picture so that everything moving was kinda blurred...???? Anyone gettin this?
 
That delay is typical of just about all digital cameras. It has to do with the operation of the CCD. You can deal with it a little bit by making sure the flash is OFF and the LCD is OFF. But, it is always there, and can really be annoying. The first digital to get rid of that is the Canon D30 - but that is largely because they replaced the CCD sensor with a CMOS sensor.

Open shutter night shots are possible if your camera lets you set aperture priority, and you put it on a tripod and turn off the flash. But, you will probably notice a lot of "noise" in the image as well as fireworks streaks. Noise appears usually as tiny white dots.
