Here are some pics that I took with my Olympus

Link

This is the machine at my house, so it is only a 128k upload connection. The pics are shrunk down to 800x600, to load faster on the web. They were taken over New Years.

Spooner, per your original question, here are some of the things you should look for (not necessarily in order):
1) Image quality (megapixels, flash quality, zoom capability etc.)
2) Storage format (Smartmedia or Compact Flash, if you have other portable devices this may matter to you)
3) PC Connection type (serial connections are REALLY slow, look for USB)
4) Ease of use (size of LCD, menus, auto settings etc. - check out reviews for this)
5) Size/Weight/Durability
6) Bundle - does it come with enough memory, any batteries, etc.
7) Bells and whistles (video/sound recording etc.)

I'm sure there's more but that is what I can think of off the top of my head.

I'd get a 3mp one - 2mp is outdated, and if you ever want to print 8x10 prints, it won't be that good looking. Don't buy a huge camera like the 995 - you will never use it - that's like buying a brick phone nowadays :)

i have a canon powershot a20, found it online for 315 shipped, 2.1 megapixel, has optical and digital zoom, purcchase a 64 meg media card from new egg for about 30 dollars and some rechargable batteries and a case and you'll have a great package for under 400 dollars.

target.com has teh a20 clearance for $280.. hunt around and you can find a 10% coupon code.

IMO, 2MP is enough for anyone that is looking for sharing and printing up to 8x10. I had a canon s10 for a couple weeks and have an 8x10 printout (from shutterfly) and it's wonderful. After that, i'd start looking for features you want. Size of a camera is also personal preference... i don't find that the nikon 995 is a "brick."
