Digital camera picks

Update:
So I decided to get the Sony DSC-V3, in case anyone was wondering.... (I paid $595)
I appreciate all the suggestions, and looked at every camera mentioned.
The Nikon 8400 I also seriously considered, but it is much more expensive. I was also very dissapointed with the pop-up flash on the Nikon- very cheap and vulnerable feeling.
The Canons I was initially interested in I dismissed- Canon really seems to have dropped the ball with their 7mp offerings. Hopefully they'll improve.

I also purchased an HP Photosmart 375, picking it over the Sony EX50 due primarily to print costs (the hp is about $0.29 per print, with the Sony at 0.67).

I'm planning to pick up a digital camera in the next week or so, any suggestions or recommendations are appreciated.
I only really have experience with a Canon S110.

I'm interested chiefly in the Canon S70 or possibly G6, and the Pentax Optio 750Z.
I've read some threads on this board, and looked over dpreview.com to some extent.
I would like to spend under $500 (I can get the S70 for $420 and the G6 for $580 through my employer, I'm not sure the discounted price of the Optio).
Anyway, I want it chiefly as a point-and-shoot camera for kid pics and casual photos, but would like a wider feature set for occasional use- specifically manual focus and good macro ability. The dpreview review for the S70 calls macro into question, and one or two of the user reviews touch on it as well.

Thanks for looking :)

What camera is that?
That's all the closer it can get in macro mode, so if that's good enough, you can snag it for only $299.00 at Sears. I got one for my son as a point & shoot in January for $460.00! Best bang for the buck I could find at the time, and I went through two other cameras before settling on it. My brother just bought one as a Christmas present for his wife, and my step sister and husband are buying one before Christmas, so they can record all the parties. They both wanted to buy cheaper cameras, but I told them I thought their money would be better spent with that unit. If there was a better deal to be had, I'd have pointed them that way for sure.

Same Camera I have, great little little camera, all the features you could want and a great point a shoot mode, the Hologram AF is a nice feature for low light shots

did you hand hold that or tripod it?
Wow, I didn't realize I was shooting so slow. 1/10 second. I had both elbows on the table for support.

I honestly like my F707 a lot more than the V1, since it has a closer macro ability, longer zoom, and brighter lens, but the V1 is a LOT smaller and cheaper, so that's the trade off I guess.

s70 has too many issues. Purple fringing and vignetting (dark corners with flash on wide setting) are the culprits. I returned mine. FWIW, the little brother S60 also has this issue.

The G6 is good but bulky and has terrible video abilities for a camera of its price.

The Pentax 750 is the swet spot. 5x zoom, great pics, great video, compact, flippable LCD. Only issue is that it's 37.5mm at wide angle--definitely not enough for tight shots like at a pub, etc........All compacts have this issue though........

........Which leads me to my three recommendations for you:

1.) Nikon 8400 ($700 street). Has it all, includeing super high 8 MP resolution. Great pics. Great video, although time limited to 60 seconds per clip at highest quality mode. AND HAS 24mm!! It's the only camera to offer this width. It make a HUGE difference when you can see the panorama of your pics better than a tight 38mm compact!

2.) Fuji F810 ($420 street). Compact. Great pics and video. It's 32.5 wide which is doable. Has wide screen format option for pics and video. Battery life is good but could be better. Dpreview.com has a review on it.

3.) Olympus 5060 ($500 street). Great pics. Decent video, but could be better. 27mm wide! Can't really go wrong with this one.

These 3 cameras should do you nicely. They're about the size of the G6, with the exception of the F810, which is smaller than an S70.

Thanks for the recommendation, I'll definitely check that one out :)

I hadn't noticed earlier, in part, because my employer doesn't carry it- but that's a great price tag, so I'd consider going elsewhere :)

Great reply, thanks for the info :)
I think what's really seducing me about the Pentax 750 is the 5x optical zoom :)
24mm is great on the 8400, but that may proive to be more than I really want to spend.

Thanks for the recommendations, I'll look into them :)

Agreed. Panasonic is really starting to steal the thunder from Sony/Nikon/Canon with their latest round of digicams.

The FZ20 is a great value for the features you get.

Do any of you know how the Sony DSC-V1 sizes up against the Canon S410? I currently own an S410 and love it to death except for taking pics under low-light conditions... its just struggles to get a clear pic unless I hold the camera completely still. I mainly use my camera for eBay auctions, but also love nighttime pics. Ornery, you seem to be very knowledgable and really back up Sony digicams. Would you suggest I sell my S410 and get the Sony V1? Or would it make that much of a difference?
