I have been reading the reviews at PCmag and CNET but their reviews are rather short, are there an other more indepth camera sites that you guys can reccommend?

Just a warning, researching/buying DSLR bodies is the EASY part. Buying the best set of lenses for your shooting style is the hard part.

I can already tell your budget won't cut it.

For landscapes, you need a wide lens. For wildlife, you need a telephoto.

The Nikon D50 will be the cheapest camera body you can buy.

I picked up a Nikon D70 kit at the end of last summer and am completely happy with it. I chose it over the Rebel XT mainly because I didn't like the feel of the XT.. it was small in my hands and felt awkward and plasticy.

Make sure you go to a camera store (or Best Buy if you must) and hold some of the cameras. I would order online though.. you'll save some good cash.

If you're new to DSLR's.. the kit lens should hold you over until you start to figure out what you need. The Nikon Kit lens is better than the XT kit lens from everything I've read.

I since spent $105 on a 50mm f1.8 lens, and $100 on a gray market Nikon 300mm zoom lens. The Zoom is nothing special, but its cheap and gets the job done so I can play with it and learn what kind of GOOD zoom lens I may purchase in a couple years.

I'm not sure I agree here. He can choose a kit setup for now and expand it later. A Nikon or Canon kit would still be a hell of a lot better than anything from the small sensor category. He just has a lot less for options, which actually makes the decision somewhat easier.

Why not?

I don't plan on being able to buy all the lenses I needs right away, just a good solid body and a decent lens to start out with.

Everyone knows I am a Canon fanboi and would rush to suggest a Canon Rebel XT, but people are right, you need to go to the store and pick one up. The size and weight of the XT can put people off.

If you like the XT, consider getting it with the EFS 18-55 kit lens for $732 from buydig.com. Then consider the Canon EF 70-200 F4L lens for $569 from Beachcamera.com. This would be roughly $1300 excluding taxes, S&H, bags, memory cards, cleaning kits, tripods, etc. But you would get a great camera body, so-so wide-angle lens, and a really good telephoto.

Stepping up from that, consider...

Canon EOS-20D body only for $1057 from dbuys.com
Sigma 18-50 F2.8 for $449 from dbuys.com
Canon 70-200 F4L for $569 from beachcamera.com

Total for this would be $2075 for a MUCH improved set-up but still excluding taxes, S&H, bags, memory cards, cleaning kits, tripods, etc.

I think the kit lens will do you just fine until you really figure out what you want. You can always do a little "poor-mans" zooming with photochop.. as long as you're not blowing these pics up into 8x10's. I use my D70 Kit lens 95% of the time still. Its a nice size and a really good carry-around lens.

oh and buy the 50mm f1.8 canon lense if you go with the 350xt see the wonders of primes

18-200 VR and the 50 1.8 instead of the 18-70

This is a great suggestion. Get the 18-200 VR if you can find it/afford it.
