digital camera as webcam vs normal webcam?

For a price of under $175, which do you think would be better in terms of image quality a regular webcam, or a digital camera with webcam capabilities? The camera would be used indoors, to record a projected image. Probably in a room lit by flourescent lighting.

If you think the digital camera would be better, do you know any for under $175 that would be good?
If webcam, what is a good webcam?

I can use usb, usb2, or firewire to connect. Maybe a capture card... I would rather not, however, since it will be used on laptops too.
