Becacuse I haven't seen many if any people with Minolta cameras. I know they made good still cameras back when my uncle bought one which would be like 8 years ago. I haven't been following them since.

I would prefer the Canon S30/40 over the minolta but that's just me..

Canon S30/40's are metal casing... so their durable .. ( i think magnesium alloy ) plus it has loads of features..

visit Steves-digicam site it has a lot of information ....

f100 has metal casing and loads of features too

durability wise? about the same as any other compact digital camera, i would say.

since you seem interested, here are my observations:

pros:
- *smaller* than s30 and s40. s30 and s40 are often viewed as compact cameras, but they are just plain chunky if you hold them in real life.
- 4 mp
- takes great pictures
- fast autofocus!

cons:
- slow startup time (this hasn't really been an issue for me)
- slow zoom (this is really the only gripe i have)

there have also been complaints about hot pixels when you take night photos, but ymmv on that one.

i think it is a great camera, and have not found a f100 owner that would tell you otherwise. i think your best bet though, is to go to a camera store and test it out, compare it to the canons, etc. i went in looking to test out a s330... didn't really like it much. i tested the s30 and s40 after that, didn't really like them either. they seemed a sluggish to me. the guy was like "have a look at this one", handed me the f100, and i fell in love.

I don't have an F100, but I do own a Minolta DImage 7. There are a couple of complaints I have about the camera, some of which were corrected in the 7i update Minolta released. My camera has a ponderously slow autofocus, and eats batteries like nobodies business (though having a couple of sets of 1800mAh batteries and a rapid charger help a bit), but I wouldn't trade it for any other camera (well, unless someone wanted to trade a digital SLR straight up). Another hassle people have with the DImage cameras (not sure if the F100 has the same issue) is that images from the camera are stored in a proprietary Minolta colorspace, instead of the standard sRGB color space. Minolta provides a utility to do the conversion, but it is an extra step. However, I don't color correct mine and I have yet to notice a difference. The car pics in my sig were taken with my DImage 7 and they are not color corrected.

The build quality of the camera is excellent. I am not one to baby the camera, and it has held up quite nicely.

do you think it is worth buying one mail order from america to the uk apex? I have a friend in LA who I could forward it two, and get him to send it to me if necessary.

Considering you can get both of those for half price in the US? Yes.

Airmail from the states will run $14-$30 or so.

BTW, here are some pictures taken with my P9

Some full size ones :) (2 are 1600x1200, the rest are 2272x1704) None have been retouched.

and you can find over 1000 more at my website (aphexii.com). Keep in mind the ones on my regular site have been resampled down, shrunk, and compressed.

well i can get the p71 for 255 in the high street and with 1 yr warranties etc

I can also get it for 335us plus 35 or so I guess shipping, plus what I expect will be a 17.5% sales tax on entry to the uk = (1.58) 230-240stlg, which is only 10 or 20 difference if sth goes wrong, its my insurance, although im not sure whether i could get roung the VAT, I dont think i can.

i dont like the style of the minolta and frankly the diff between 3.2 M pixels and 4 isnt as big as between 2 and 3.2 is it?
thanks for the advice tho. btw if you went to london, did you go to the tate modern?

For a good deal the best buy advertised the Sony S85 4MP for $399 these were $600 not that long ago. not the smallest but much better lens than the P series. my $.02 the canon s30/s40 are nice too. I love my Olympus 4040Z you can find them for about $400 with a year warranty from returnbuy.com.

I'm looking for a good 3-4MP camera that takes my NiMH AA batteries, since I have a ton of 'em.

I have the Sony P7. 3xoptical zoom, 3mp, the best video mode out there with mpeg-ex and good automated features. Not good if you want all the manual controls.

How much was your sony for? Do you guys think that a Used 5 month old Canon S30 for $300 is a good deal? No extras included just everything the camera came with. It is in good condition.

Thanks
