Hey guys,

I am really looking into buying a Digital Camera but I can't figure out what to get. I want to spend somewhere in the $300 range. Anything that is either 3 MegaPixles or over it is fine. Preferably something small. The last digital camera I bought was a while ago I bought the Nikon Coolpix 950 for my dad's birthday. I got it when it first came out. I check the hot deals forum quite often too but I can't figure out which camera out of the ones in the deals is the best. Canon seems to make some nice cameras but I'd like advice from you guys.

Thanks,

Nutcase

the minolta dimage f100 is perfect for you... small, 4 mp, and around 300 bucks (a little more i think). best in class.

I have a Canon S30 for sale if you're interested. It's about 5 months old. If you want some samples, just let me know via PM.

I already looked at the other thread but I am actually willing to spend up to about $400 and what I want is slightly different from the other post. I don't know but 2MP seems kinda low to me so thats why I'm sort of consdering the Canon A40 but not really cause it isn't that small and it isn't that high MP. I am looking at the S200 though because its tiny! but then again its only 2MP.

Any suggestions are apperciated.

Just make sure that CCD pixels = image size. Several cameras now claim a 3-4 megapixel image size, but they get there by interpolation with a 2.1 megapixel CCD... You end up with a 4 megapixel image, but it's not real sharp because of the interpolation.

What do you guys think of the minolta dimage f100? I looked into it a little bit and it seems like a good camera for a good price. Am I missing something? Are Canons better or something? Becacuse I haven't seen many if any people with Minolta cameras. I know they made good still cameras back when my uncle bought one which would be like 8 years ago. I haven't been following them since.

I would prefer the Canon S30/40 over the minolta but that's just me..

Canon S30/40's are metal casing... so their durable .. ( i think magnesium alloy ) plus it has loads of features..

visit Steves-digicam site it has a lot of information ....

Minolta's are good but I prefer Olympus, Nikon, Fuji and Canon.

I've heard good things about the Sony P7 and P71 from the Sony digicam zealots here.

Dell routinely offers anywhere from 5-20% off peripherals (digicams included) and you can usually stack $30 off $300 coupons plus 2% eBates and free shipping to make a spectacular deal. I would keep your eyes on the Hot Deals forum for the next round of Dell Software and Peripherals deals.

I dunno if you've checked Here, but I found that site really helpful when picking out a camera. you can search for specific features you want, and compare cameras side by side. Then, once you find a suitable camera, you can come back here and look for deals :D.

Lars: The canon seems to have better reviews though. Hmm now I'm confused. Do you personally own the Minolta? how is it durability wise?

I personally own the Minolta S404 which uses about the same technology but has a larger case. I could not be happier with that camera so I guess that the F100 is great as well. What I like about the Minolta is that you can use NiMH AA batteries.

Here are some examples of my S404 pics:

Either camera, Canon S30/S40 or the Minolta F100, is great though. :)

I've always enjoyed my Fuji cameras, but don't have much experience with anything else. I have an old Fuji MX-1200, my Dad has a Fuji FinePix 1400, and I have a Fuji FinePix 4900z. My wife will be getting a Fuji FinePix 2600 for Christmas, but shhhhhhh! Don't tell her that! :)

I like Fuji because they have always used Smartmedia. (except the most recent cameras are using that tiny little xD memory card). On the versions that can capture video, they capture in a standard AVI format, so it is very easy to edit. (As opposed to Olympus that captures in Quicktime format.) Every Fuji camera so far is basically like all of the others, so it is very easy for me to go from one camera to the other.

Let's see... the old MX-1200 has a plastic body, and I believe that my Dad's FinePix 1400 does also. My 4900z has a metal body, and I'm not sure what the FinePix 2600 will have.

Weird how the Minolta is cheaper than the S30 eventhough it is a higher mega pixel camera. It goes for $327 while the S30 goes for $374 and the S40 goes for $412.

s30 = 350 or 550usd link

f100 = 350 or 550usd link

is there some difference between what is sold in the us and over here?

it only has a 2x optical zoom, less depth of field, is second tier in image quality and has low light focus problems, but otherwise is excellent
