Just had a quick question about how these badboys work...my dad's looking to get a new house phone for christmas...

When someone calls and gets the answering machine, are they prompted with a list of people in the house that they can leave a message for? (From the different mailboxes?) It seems like a simple question, but I can't find an explanation about it anywhere...

Thanks :D

i used to know someone that had something like what you're talking about. the mom's recorded voice would come on and ask you to push 1 to leave a message for dad, 2 for herself, or 3 for her daughter.

Yes.

If you'd like to leave a message for Ben, press one. If you'd like to leave a message for tom or sherry, press two. If you'd like to make this machine self destruct, press 1-2-0-5-7-0-9

My answering machine has 3 mailboxes, which I used when I lived with two other people. Although for my phone (old V-Tech that still rocks), you have to press *1, *2, *3...if you don't press anything then it defaults to mailbox 1.

So I'm guessing that one doesn't prompt the caller with who they'd like to leave the msg for?

Also taking recommendations on cordless phones now :D

I have an answering machine with 4 mailboxes. Caller has to enter 01 or 02 or 03 or 04 to leave a message in a specific mailbox.

I've had the machines for 6 years, lived with multiple roommates and by myself, and have NEVER used the mailbox functions. Tried them out but no one wants to listen to a message explaining which mailboxes are which. No one wants to hear a message longer than "Can't pickup, leave a message."

My machine has three mailboxes. I've never used any other than the main one.

Plus your mom needs one for my booty calls. TELL HER TO ANSWER THE DAMN PHONE! I KNOW SHE'S HOME! I CAN SEE THE LIGHT ON! :|

might seem a little unprofessional to call your mom's business and have the option to leave a personal message.

edit: ;) depends on your mom's business.

The machine prompts the caller however I want it to. I'm the one that records the message, so I'm the one that has to say "Press *1 for so-and-so, *2 for ....".

Now that I'm married, my wife and I just use the default mailbox (Mailbox 1). All I had to do to change that was record a new greeting. Now it just says "Hi, this is (me) and (my wife). Leave us a message!"

People can still leave a message in the other mailboxes. However, my greeting doesn't tell them that, so the caller assumes it's just like a regular answering machine. For example, everytime I leave a message for my wife I put it Mailbox 3 so she knows it's me because no one else knows there are other mailboxes. :)
