Digicam just stopped turning on

Is there a simple explanation for a point-and-shoot digital camera to stop turning on at all? It's a Canon IXUS 500 HS bought over 2 years ago on a trip in HK. I bought and tried a brand new charged battery and it simply doesn't respond either.
 
In addition to battery replacement, remove the memory card and reinsert it. Then try it.
