Digicam advice needed

I have an Olympus D460 Zoom on order and I need suggestions on: which/how much smart media (only comes with 8 megs), batteries/charger, reader(only comes with serial) and any other suggestions you can think of. I use an EOS 630 with 28-70US and 75-300US for my 35mm needs, but this digital is brand new to me. I will be using Win2K. Thanks in advance.

So far looks like: 2x32mb smart media
battery deal from Thomas Distributing: MAHA MH-C204F-4AA160DC POWEREX COMBO KIT
reader?

Thanks everyone, you have been most helpful.

Gee be patient. Some of us have jobs here😀. I have an Oly 490z. I've found for my picture needs that getting two extra 32 MB cards did it for me. Since your camera is 1.3 Mega Pixels. You could probably get away with less. I go to card for taking vacation picture. I went to Europe for two weeks and was able to take over 200 pictures at HQ. Now that I'm at home I use SHQ and always leave one of the 32 MB cards in my system.

Thanks cyclistca.🙂 It's hard to be patient, this is a Christmas present and I know exactly squat about them. I was just trying to keep this on the 1st page.

I have an Olympus 2000, and I'd go with at least 64MB of smartmedia, also. I went with 2 32MB too, because of a buy.com deal. Buy.com also had a great price on the smart & friendly USB reader. If you can still
find it, the price was great, $20 because they went under. As for batteries, do a search & you will find a couple of good threads.

Thanks Muadib. From what I have found searching, looks like the consensus is the battery deal from Thomas Distributing is the better quality.

Well, I have a Kodak DC265, comprable in megapixel output. On the medium setting, a 16mb compact flash card gets me around 41 pics, give and take. This quality is good enough to print out.

If you plan on going on vacation, anything less than 32mb is going to be a pain. It really depends on how much you want to pay. 64mb should be very safe. This summer, I only had a 16mb card and an 8mb card. Drove me crazy trying to find an internet cafe to upload my pics every other day. At times I had to delete some photos I really wanted to hold on to. So grab 64mb just to be safe...

Thanks dcdomain. I think maybe 2x32 may be the way to go after checking prices. I haven't found a great deal on a reader yet, but still looking.

I'm thinking of selling my Olympus D-620L, the NiMH batteries, charger, Smart Media Cards, and Smart Media reader (one parallel and one USB) all together or piece-by-piece.

Let me know if you're interested. Check your email.

Hey I also have a barely used 32mb smartmedia card.. 3.3v. Want to get rid of it after I got a 64mb card for my brothers Nomad II player. It has a little plastic case for it. You interested? How much is a good price for this? Anyone want to suggest a price? I'm not sure how much to let this go for... don't want to rip anyone off or get ripped off myself.

Frglss -- I have an Olympus 450 (previous model to the 460). I pretty much agree with everything stated above: 2 x 32 Smartmedia cards should be more than enough (I have an 8, 16, and 32 MB card; a 32 MB card can hold about 70 or so SHQ pictures) and Thomas Distributing is great for batteries and a charger (I bought 4 AA Nexcells from them -- very good batteries and inexpensive; try the Maha charger as well). For a reader (I'd pretty much consider it a necessity for any digital camera), I got the Microtech USB CameraMate. It has both a Smartmedia slot and a CompactFlash slot (just in case you get a new camera that uses different media).

One additional thing to note regarding the Smartmedia cards: you need to use Olympus' own proprietary memory in order to use the Panorama function on the camera. Any brand memory works in the camera, but I think the guide bars for framing panorama photos will only show up on the LCD when using the Olympus memory. Olympus memory is easy enough to find, but it may be a bit more expensive.

Hope this helps.

Frglss -- Just to clarify, you can still make panoramic photos using non-Olympus brand Smartmedia cards; you just won't get the guide bars on the LCD to help you frame the shot. If you've got a good eye and a steady hand, you'll probably be okay without the guide bars. What's really more important is that you have a good panorama-making program on your computer that can stitch all the pictures together correctly.

Good luck.
