I am planning on picking up a digital P&S camera, something like the 800IS or a Fuji F30/F31. My question, are the accidental damage warranties offered by Best Buy or Circuity City worth it for a camera? In the $300-400 range it would be priced about $90 for a 4 year plan.

just buy it with your amex.
I think you get an extra 1 year warranty on your purchase.

I would say if the item is <$1000, then getting an additional warranty on top of it is stupid.

3 months ago I would have told you how much of a rip off they are and how un necessary they are. After getting pushed in the Hotel pool in Costa Rica WITH my new SD450 in hand, I might offer a different opinion.

Did you have a warranty? The way cameras are exposed and vulnerable it has me thinking. My only question is how often they try to actually fix them. I'd rather just have an exchange.

Just remember to read the terms of the extended/accidental damage warranty before purchasing anything.

I put it down as a loss and bought a new one. At least I have an extra battery and charger.... Oh I did not by a protection plan with the new one either lol

I picked up a pamphlet on the policy from BB when I was there fondling the cameras Does not say much about the accidental damage coverage.

A warranty covers manufacturing defects, not accidental damage.

OP - I would not pay extra for a warranty or accidental damage protection on something that is relatively inexpensive like a P&S digicam. You only buy insurance to handle events that you could not otherwise afford - i.e. a car accident or serious illness. If you buy insurance for little things you're almost always going to come out on the losing end unless you commit fraud.

Consider how quickly digicam technology improves and prices drop. If and when your camera breaks, you'll be able to replace it for much less than you're paying now.

i got the 800is with the 4 year bestbuy plan, the screen can only brake 2 times and the camera can only be replaced once

I think I'd rather drop the money now than to piss my pants every time I want to let my kids take pics with the camera. I usually decline the warranty plans. I even denied the extended warranty on my van but ended up getting the exact same manufacturers warranty from another dealer for half the price of the original sales guy. The reason in that case was that one power sliding door motor would pay for it.

In this case, I can see the camera easily being dropped.
