which one is more important for you? video or still pictures?
video quality in digital cameras suck, and still picture quality in camcorders suck. so you gotta know your priority application and proceed from there.

It depends. Which part is more important to you?

Obviously, the "dedicated" piece of equipment will do each job better.

A digicam can generally only shoot short movies...

Agreed.

There are a few decent digital camcorders which take good still pictures but they are $$$.

yes. most digital cameras can shoot videos, but the quality is gonna be crap, and you only can shoot like 15 minutes unless you buy a 3GB memory card for a couple grand...

Yes, certainly. Most digicams shoot movies now.

I recommend an A70* if your budget is around 300$.

*Take this recommendation at face value since I have never researched the video capabilities of different digicams, there very well may be better.

AFAIK, the A70 does 640x480(& lower) @ 15fps.

So is possible to shoot for about 30-40 minutes with the digital camera in one shoot and then going on eventually building up say a 1-2 hr movie on the computer that I could create a dvd/cd ?

You want all this for $300?

Keep dreaming.

You have to choose, do you want a good digicam or camcorder?

It is also pretty rare for a camcorder to have a flash, which makes their stills look even worse.

30-40 mins isn't going to happen.

Even with a 256mb CF card, I can only get 7 minutes at 320 x 240 with my A60.

With 1gb, that would be 28 mins.

It sounds like you need a digicorder. But good luck, for 300$.

You'll be getting 15 minutes of low resolution, choppy video.

If you want to take still pictures, get a digicam.

If you want to make movies, get a camcorder.

It's a trade off; you can't have both together with any degree of quality.

You'll need a camera and a 512mb Compact Flash card.

It's going to run you like 350$+...

Correct or not ?
Would that video worth viewing ?

That's 15 minutes of 320 x 240 video at 15fps or less. Not exactly optimal.

You need a real camcorder. A digital camera is for taking still pictures.

I am not sure what you can find in the world of digicorders for 300$.
