Where I live, there are not enough spots at night for everyone to actually park. Basically, if you get unlucky you're gonna be driving around for an hour or two if you want a spot within 5-6 blocks.

So, with that in mind, I'm supposed to come home after work, see half the street NOT being parked in but with some dude's old lawn chair there and NOT park? Yeah right.

I've long since got rid of my car here, as it was more trouble than it was worth. However, I do have fun whenever it snows removing all the "this is MY saved parking spot, lolz!" items and putting them in one spot on my block. Slowly it seems to be having an effect, as I see less and less of these idiotic things littering the street. Sure, I might get shot but it's well worth the risk to remove these idiot's sense of entitlement.

Stupidest "common knowledge" policy ever. I had to dig my car out just like everyone else on the block to GET to work. I did NOT expect that spot to be there when I got home, and had no right to even consider that possibility to begin with. Don't like it? Pay more for an apartment with a garage spot which are plentiful for an extra $300-500/mo. Not my fault you're cheap!

ABSOLUTELY!
I'm a self employed, 45 yr old carpenter who hasn't had the benefit of higher education like the OP, "Remedy" or even a HS diploma as many people do. In the 29 years I've been driving whenever I rented an apt and also now that I own a house, parking was a major consideration BEFORE I moved in. If your house has no drive, make one or move! Sell the car and use mass transit. YOU chose to live where you are. OP,,,, You sound like my ex-wife.

What exactly are you talking about? Let me break it down for you one more time since you don't seem to grasp this.

He has his own house across the street.

He has his own driveway across the street. (he can fit almost 20 vehicles in his yard he has the largest amount of property on the block itself.)

He didn't shovel his own driveway out. He chose NOT to.

He didn't shovel his own space out. He chose NOT to.

I shoveled out a space in front of my house and put the barrel there so I went got back from school, I wouldn't stuck like I was the night before.

He remove the barrel and tossed it over my fence and put his vehicle there and walked away.

Taking Mass transit has nothing do with this. Mass transit doesn't run 13 miles back to my school. Purchasing a house with a driveway is NOT an issue and has very little to do with the situation. Every neighbor already aware that we don't have one and shows some courtesy when parking their vehicle. They either use their driveway or just park in front of their own house. My parent purchased this house when she moved to this country for a small penny. It's probably worth 600k now according to the market. She's not going to just give it up for a house with a driveway because the issue is only exclusive to the neighbor across the street. Not the neighborhood entirely.

When I consulted with other neighbors about it, they voiced their opinion that if the guy would've removed their barrel and tossed it the way he did, they would have either 1) Torched his vehicle, or 2) had a physical altercation with him. This was something I didn't have time for nor did I feel like being involved with. But, something had to be done.

Why would you (phil21) risk getting shot or stabbed or other wise assaulted to just use another person parking space when you already have a driveway? Unless you like to gamble with your well being.

But, I hope you comprehend what the situation was. Because it does NOT seem like you did.

Not only are you still pissed about something relatively minor that happened a week ago, but now you're flaming on anyone with a different opinion.

Personally, I don't see how the whole spot thing works... obviously its not private property. You ought to be pissed at your city for having zoned neighborhoods without sufficient parking.

I'm not Pissed off. I don't like when people try and use the comment "Go buy a house with a driveway" or, "the property doesn't belong to you, etc etc".

I've been working and at school. So, I did NOT see the last comments to the thread and didn't want to leave them unanswered.

I am NOT flaming anyone. I try to make it cut and dry as possible for certain people.

The only thing "cut and dry" is you do not own the street, it was not your space. If you want your own parking space get property that provides that or get use to parking on the street.

Hate to bump up an old thread, but had to...boston.com has a story about the mayor of Boston sending out DPW crews to pick up and dispose of the shoveled out 'space savers' today. One person replied with an absolutely brilliant idea. "Someonespecial" if you are a member of AT, I salute you!!

This sounds to me like a way people get rid of trash that they would normally have to pay to get rid of! I wonder if anyone put out an old CRT monitor or TV and saved themselves the $50.00 it would take for someone to recycle it.

This one of the perks of living in Boston. The others being surrounded by racists and, of course, the highest cost of living next to SF. Oh yeah, I forgot the benefits of a historical commission that can prohibit you from building your own driveway on your own property.

Despite our Mayor's efforts to change this practice, it's pretty commonly accepted around here that if you dig out a spot and stick something in it, nobody should mess with it.

Yeah, good to see the city doing something about it. Never understood the problem. Everyone has to dig out and leave their public parking spot on the street.

Sad thing, in some areas of the city, there are douchebags that put out parking cones all year round in front of their houses.

Permit for a driveway? A driveway is just a spot where a car is parked that isn't a road. Sounds like you have some lawn. Just buy a nice 4WD and drive up over the curb and park on your lawn. You can clear it with a snow blower even.

That's a pretty sh!tty move by them. I wouldn't even ask them to move it...I'd bet they get hostile and defensive considering that they parked there anyways and threw your trash can.

You might have to result to other measures to teach them a lesson.

I'm in Boston and we had a Nor'Easter storm on Valentines day. Now, Initially, after the storm, we all go out and dig out spaces. Well, the slush turned to ice over night and was difficult. So, most vehicles couldn't be moved if they were sub-compact. Due to the wheels sitting in slush and slush turning into ice overnight kept the wheels embedded.

So, Next morning, I went to dig out my vehicle. Took about 45 minutes in the freezing cold, but not bad. Put down the ice melt pellets to make a bit more effective for clearing the space. I put the trashcan down to goto school. I come back from school, and not only is my space taken, but they toss my Trash bin over my fence back into my yard! After all that hard work I put in to dig it out in front of my house, someone has the nerve to take my barrel, toss it over my fence, park their vehicle and not move it? :|

It's a new neighbor, with an Izuzu Rodeo. They have their own driveway, but they won't use the f'n driveway they have and I don't have a driveway. (we're the only house that doesn't have one on the street out of 100.) So, they use my space and expect me to park down the street from my house after already dug out a space for myself in the freezing cold?

I need advice on how to go about getting even or confronting them. Because, this is ridiculous. :|

Do you OWN the parking spot with EXCLUSIVE rights to park there and have AUTHORITY to decide who can and cannot park there?

If not, tough shit.

I know this thread is years old but... I hate inconsiderate assholes... even if he doesn't own the street, other people should respect his space in front of his own house unless it is the only space (like in the city), especially if a lot of effort was put into clearing it. This isn't the city but a suburban area, right?

I had a thread a few weeks back about some renter (in these non-rental houses) leaving his 1993 vehicle in front of my house for MONTHS. I finally talked to the "landlord" nicely cause the dude himself wasn't home... he moved it a few days later. But even then at least he wasn't doing shit like taking the only spot in front of my house... that's just fucking disrespectful.

Water down his car until it's frozen stuck.

Love this idea.
