Different volume for each application?

When I had Win98SE, I recall that I was able to have different volume for each application and even each instance. For example, I could run WinAmp and have it really loud but it does not affect anything in say Windows Media Player.

Now I'm running XP Home and noticed that this doesn't really apply anymore. It seems that all sound has been bounded together. Is this a DirectX issue? XP issue? Something else?

If anyone could shed some light on the matter... Thanks!

well, winamp has it's own volume control onboard....so couldn't you just raise winamp volume while keeping your system volume low?
