Different types of illegal content

I was wondering if someone could clarify the rules on the discussion of illegal content. Discussions involving acts that could lead to copyright infringement, private torrent site invites and the like are forbidden from what I can tell. Getting/asking for a private torrent site invite is not in itself illegal, but it's your forum so respect that it's your rules.

On the other hand we have the various threads discussing the use of illegal drugs. These types of threads are also totally tolerated. Some even go as far to indirectly encourage the use of these types of drugs.

So my question is where exactly do you draw the line with the discussion of illegal content? It seems like intellectual property infringement, even when the discussion isn't against the law, is treated much more harshly then the discussion of illegal drug use. Just wondering if you guys could shed some light on this issue.

Do we need a clear-cut line for this? (Mods you decide)

I think the current system is working just fine. And the worst penalty I've heard so far is just locking up the respective threads. It get's the message across to everyone involved just fine.

My 2 cents.

Another thread asking for a nanny-state? You can just not go into the threads that you know are going to mention things you dont want to read.

Yikes.

It's not about having a nanny state, first of all this AT isn't a state at all, but it still has to comply with the laws of the relevant jurisdiction. It's about the double standard I see when it comes to rules against illegal content, and clarifying where that line is drawn.

Generally speaking these posts are locked as well, especially when users inquire on how to acquire or make substances. I've seen vacation notes for users who have done this.

I was just looking at anecdotal evidence from threads like these,

http://forums.anandtech.com/me...id=38&threadid=2227716
http://forums.anandtech.com/me...id=38&threadid=2241277

I'm sure there are plenty of other similar threads as well.

You mean you're upset because of all your parody threads and you getting a vacation so you think others should pay some type of consequence?

I agree with CrazyLazy that the AT forums seem to approve of, or at least tolerate to a great extent, comments of illegal drug use while greatly frowning upon comments of piracy.

I'm simply making a personal observation, not a suggestion of any sort.

Burning content that is streamed to your TV for personal consumption is not illegal, it falls under fair use.

I guess I can understand the line drawn by the moderators though, drug threads are allowed as long as they don't show people how to make/acquire them.

What if it's PPV/Showtime/HBO/etc?

Still legal, assuming you are paying for the channels legally in the first place.

If the quoted OP's his friend is paying for the channels, why would he need to burn disks for him?

Fast forward through commercials, save it to be watched at a different date, or save it so he can watch it on his computer. Burning it to a disc is no different then saving it on your DVR.

Other than it is now available to a different party to use at will and that did not pay for the service

A DVR is also available to another party, only difference is a DVD is slightly more portable. Bottom line is what the OP described is totally legal.
