different south bridge setup

I currently have an intel setup with a 945gc north/ich7 south, and my hard drives are running off the south bridge. My question is that if i buy a new motherboard with a different chipset (still intel based though) will i be able to just plug in my hard drive and still have my xp setup, or will i have to reinstall windows again?

I'm not 100% sure, but just to let you know someone has read this thread, you will have to reinstall unless you use the same motherboard.

Yeah ive seen ive had over 50 views, but no ones helping me out I just didnt know if intel used different sata controllers for each southbridge chipset or if its essentially the same controller just combined with all the other features of their south bridges.

Went from xp to 939 no clean install.
Went from 939 to a 680i with a e6600 no clean install.
Went from 939 to a Intel gig 35 no clean install.
With in a week or so i did clean xxp installs on every MB.
Except from starting faster i saw no difference with clean install.
Hardwere wise it should work.
Problem lies with type of xp retail oem etc
MS has to accept new MB or no updates from MS

yes but did you use a sata drive, i have to use a sata controller since my hard drives are sata, with ide that doesnt matter but with sata controllers it does. It doesnt matter what type of xp i use, its all new software that no xp retail or oem has on them because of the south bridge that controls the sata on the board will not have drivers on windows xp, when windows xp came out i dont even think sata was used yet...or even invented? But no i could switch all different kinds of motherboards, it just depends on if it has a south bridge that my xp already has drivers for, which in any sata users case is no, they have to preinstall the drivers during windows setup (the f6 option)

I think since I wont have the same sata controller installed that I will have to make a clean install again.

With your current board, what mode was/is the SATA controller in? If it's IDE mode, basically non-AHCI/non-RAID mode, then your odds should be good... just keep the controller on the new motherboard in the same mode. If you want to switch the mode later, there are articles out there with instructions on how to do so under XP.

On a related note, what are your CPU specs? I'm going to assume you will be moving from a single-core non-HT processor to a dual-core. If that's the case, there are some other OS related items that need to change/be updated (e.g.: uniprocessor vs multiprocessor HAL).

It was in ahci/raid mode. it was intels ich7 south bridge 82801g sata controller. it doesnt matter what processor i use, that doesnt require driver changes or anything like that. Why to people keep going off topic on the processor or version of xp i use, it has nothin to do with either. the question is do i need to do a clean install if i am using a sata controller and will be switching to a different sata controller?

From playing around with my boards going from ich7 (p31) to ich9 (p35) and vice versa required a reinstall. While going from a p45 to p35 and vice versa I did not. That was with vista though I would assume xp would behave similarly.

Yeah that was what im basically going to so i thought id need a restart, but even with xp ill have to do it, vista behaves totally differently because of newer drivers and even with service pack 1 too. XP has no sata controller drivers on it so no matter what if you run in ahci/raid mode you will need to do the f6 option unless you build your own xp with drivers (i used nlite and had it package the drivers for this controller right on my xp image, its kinda like making your own updated xp with drivers for newer hardware, so when i finished the xp setup, all my hardware was installed and i just write what setup i had on the disc image so i knew which cd goes with whatever computer i use.)

no not yet, ill find out when my new board and everything gets here either on wed or thursday because i bought a new p45 board from newegg and bought a processor off a guy of these forums (e6600 if anyone wanted to know) i wanted to get a e6x20 series because they have oc'ed so good for me i had a 6320 that oced to 3.656 on stock voltage with the AF7 Pro. But yeah i dont know why the other guy was saying it all depends on the xp build because i dont even think sata was out when xp came out so i have no idea what he meant by having a certain build of xp.
