Spawned from the Any tips/advice on a poker tournament thread, anyone got any fun little variations of poker to play? We play every wednesday, and always play the same games.... Texas Holdem, 5-draw (with and without wilds), 7-stud, 727, baseball, deuces&jacks&king with the axe nat-7's take all... and more!

Just looking for new ideas and ways to spice things up.

Buddha's Folley is one of the best we played
Guts is good too.
from http://www.gamereport.com/poker/misc.html

Guts
PLAYERS: 4-10 (the more the merrier)
INITIAL DEAL: two cards down to each player
PLAY: Everyone secretly puts a chip in their hand if they are staying in, otherwise they leave their hand empty. Players then hold their closed hands in front of them and open them simultaneously. Players who held chips (and thus stayed in) reveal their hands. The winner takes the pot and the losers have to match what the pot was. New hands are then dealt. The game continues until only one player stays in, and thus the pot is emptied.
WINNER: Highest hand, without straights and flushes
STANDARD VARIATIONS:

Deal 1, 3, 4, or 5 cards to each player

Weenie rule: If nobody stays in, everyone reveals their hand and whoever has the best hand (and thus would have won) must match the pot.

Beat the deck: When only one player stays in, the top two cards from the deck are turned over. If these cards beat the player's hand, the player loses and must match the pot.

Limit match: A limit is set on the amount players must pay if they lose. If the pot is more than this amount, players just pay the limit.
Instead of declaring with chips, dealer counts out "one-two-three-drop" while all players hold their cards above the table. On "drop" all players who are dropping out drop their cards. This is faster, but can lead to arguments if one player is slower to drop than the others.
Auction Guts: An additional "mystery hand" is dealt face-down. Before the showdown, players bid for the right to switch hands with the mystery hand. This continues until nobody wants to switch with the new mystery hand.
Hold Your Guts: If nobody stays in, play again with the same hands. Repeat until somebody stays in.
Pass Your Guts: If nobody stays in, everyone passes 1-5 cards (decided beforehand) to the right, until someone stays in.
Progressive Guts: Start with 2 cards. If nobody stays in, everyone gets dealt another card. Repeat until someone stays in. Straights and flushes become legal at 5 cards.
Bloody Sevens: Deal 2 cards down to each player, players still in after guts get 3 cards up. 7s down are wild. Anyone with a 7 up immediately folds. High hand takes the pot, losers match (someone killed by a 7 does not match).

Buddha's Folly
PLAYERS: 4-10
INITIAL DEAL: 5 cards down to each player
PLAY: The lead rotates each hand, starting with the player to the dealer's left. The dealer turns the top card of the deck face up. The lead player has the option of taking that card or passing it to the next player clockwise. If the card is taken, the player taking it must replace it with a different card from his hand, passing that card clockwise. This continues until a card makes it all the way around without anyone taking it. Play then continues as in Guts.
WINNER: Highest hand.
STANDARD VARIATIONS:

Weenie rule: See Guts, above

Limit match: See Guts, above

Guts is a great game, but the pots can get VERY large VERY quickly.

We play a whole crapload of weird games, with wilds and other stuff that would drive poker purists nuts. :)

Murder is a favorite of ours, but it's not for the faint of heart. Basically, it's 7-stud, with one caveat - if you are dealt a pair face up, you must either match what is already in the pot, or fold. So you can see that the pot can increase exponentially. Our particularly evil variations include having to pay to fold on a pair, more than four up cards, and ALL up cards with the option to pay for each card down instead. We're kinda addicted to big pots. :D

There's sites out there with lot's a variations. I advise skimming through them, you can pick out the games that sound good while avoiding ones with too many rules, etc.

heh, with the guys i play with it's best to keep it simple... we play dealer's choice games so this one guy goes "5 stud, nothing wild." ok, no problems, so he deals 5 face down... weird but ok, i'm ready to fold, then he goes around asking people how many cards they want. heh.. ok!

Heh, yeah we've had guys where we end up spending more time explaining the game than playing it. Sometimes it is best to keep it simple. :)

We have our own 5-stud game - $5 ante right off the bat (we usually do dealer ante/dealer's game), so right away there's already ~$30 in there, and all you get is the 5 dealt, no wilds; $5 raises with no limit... we do have some money swings, that's for sure. ;)

Wow, we're really low stakes ;) we do .25 min .75 max! but that makes us able to play a long time.

at the end of every poker night we end up playing between the sheets......

one variation we play is "follow the b!tch"

it is 7 card stud, but the card after every queen (or any card you pick) becomes a wild. sometimes we have people pay for it, if they get the card after the queen they have to pay 2.4.8.16 chips if they want their card to be wild.

thats how we play too.

another is pass the trash. everyone puts up 3 stacks of chips, man with lowest card pays one of his stacks. (50 cents is pretty good) leadoff spot rotates, everyone gets 1 card. lead spot has option to keep or swap with guy to left. Guy to left has to trade unless he has a king. The trash will ttravel around table, until last person has the option of going to the deck.

Also,

Anaconda, Roll Your Own

Deal out 7 cards face down, bet. Pass 3 cards to the right. Bet. Pass 2 cards 2 spots to the left. Bet. Players make the best or worst 5 card hand. Arrange face down in order they want to reveal them. Roll top card. Bet. continue until 1 card remain face down. Players declare whether they are going HIGH or LOW. split pot.

Iron Cross:

deal out 2 (or 4) cards face down, and a 'cross' or '3x3 grid' of face down cards in middle of table. BET, deal flips over a cross card (save middle for last), BET after each card is revealed. Players must use all three of a row from the shared pile to make best hand possible. You can play as split pot.

BTW,

here is a pic of my poker chips... they weigh 13 grams each... splash like casino chips. they are great fun. Also, the tequila is great fun too.

cool thanks for the variations! we've played pass the trash but played it like anaconda instead...so whoever told us how to play, got it mixed up. hahah also played follow the queen too, thats fun.
iron cross sounds cool.

We've got some poker chips, i was gonna pony up for the 13 gram ones like you have, but they were just too expensive... so we got 9 gram ones, not great, but they work
