Different operating system in a laptop?

Just wondering if it is possible to install a different operating system in a laptop if it claims to be Window ME included?
Is the method installing operating sytem different in laptop than in desktop?

You can dualboot with a laptop just as easily as with a desktop system, except that you can't add an additional HD.

I have had linux, FreeBSD, and OpenBSD all working on my old (now dead, hdd issues) laptop without problems.
