Different formats for burning data cd's

Six months ago I made a couple of data backup cd's with blank cd-rw cd's using 'Adaptec Direct Cd' software that came with my new
cd-r/w. Last week I installed 'NTI CD-Maker Pro' on my computer and when I inserted my back-up cd's I get a message that the cd needs formatting. What Give's ?? It will not read or let me add to files to a cd that was formatted with Direct CD. Does CD-Maker Pro use a different format that Direct Cd ? If it does.. then what is the best cd burning software to use ?

If you want to read the data you might try downloading the UDF reader from here

I just use my cdrws like a standard cdr. Then erase the disc when I need to reuse it. With the abundant free after rebate cdr deals I haven't found much need for cdrws.
