New Castle= older 130nm core, socket 754
Venice=Newer 90nm socket 939(and some 754 I believe), San Diego is like venice but with more cache.
Orleans=Newest, for socket AM2 boards which use DDR-2 memory, athough it doesn't appear DDR-2 offers any major performance advantage.

Just to add to that,

Clawhammer= older 130nm with 1mb cache (newcastle with double the cache basically)
Winchester= old but 90nm, Venice is better.

If your hell bent on getting an AMD gaming rig now, get a venice or a dual core if you want, dependant on budget. Personally i would wait a little while for Intels new CPU conroe, its far superior to the P4 and is likely to beat AMD's current offerings and is supposed to be competitively priced. I think its out in a month or two? Cant be exact but its a short wait.

Of the Athlon 64 series, San Diego is arguably the best currently available. Followed by Venice.
