I know there are TN and IPS panels but what about LED/Backlighting? I am trying to purchase a monitor for school in the next two days and I would like to get more information about the different types of features for monitors.

What does LED Backlighting do? Does it make the image have a more "glossy" feel? Would one prefer IPS over LED Backlighting? I would like to make a purchase fairly soon so any information would be lovely!

Here are some monitors I have been keeping an eye one.

Samsung 21.5'' with LED Backlight:

Dell 21.5'' U2211H IPS:

Asus 21.5'' 1080p:

What exactly do they mean when ASUS says a monitor is fully HD 1080p?
Anyways I think I would be happy with any one of these three monitors but would like to understand which pros and cons these 3 have so I can make the better choice!

TN and IPS are both panel types, how they actually make the image. LED and CCFL are backlighting types. How they illuminate the image that the panel creates.

It is a combination of the two that defines the monitor. LED is better than CCFL given everything else is the same. LED produces better whites and colors, maintains its brightness level for its entire life, can get both brighter and dimmer, usually is a more even lighting, uses less power and the monitors can be thinner and lighter.

IPS is better than TN for most everything but gaming. It has better viewing angles and colors than TN.

Fully HD 1080p is mostly a marketing term that simply means that it has a 1920*1080 resolution, colloquially known as 1080p.

LED is starting to become affordable, you can find them for only slightly more than their CCFL counterparts. IPS on the other hand is very expensive compared to their TN counterparts. And if you want both, you are dropping a fair amount of coin. Apple makes 2 of them, a 24" 1920*1200 (that is more expensive than it should be in light of the next one...) the 27" 2560*1440 for $900. I think HP makes one, also fairly expensive, and there might be a Dell that also fits the bill.

Ah, thanks!

I think I might snag the Dells IPS model while its on sale then. Seems like a good IPS monitor for only 60-80$ more is a steal.

Oh boy 27" @ 2560 sounds juicy. I know I cant use a 1920x1200 resolution. Ive been on my res for over 10 years and I cant downgrade,, Im cool with CRT, plus vsync on , mouse smoothness and pro playing UT3 or MW2

For that deal I'd be grabbing 3 of those Dells to replace my current ones :) Thanks for the link.
