Differences in CDR speed rating?

This has probably been answered before, but what is the difference between the rated speed of CDR media? Is 16x certified better quality than 8x? Is it better to record some things at a slower speed? Thanks

might be just me but i dont notice any such quality difference in making data or audio cds no matter what speed im burning at. Physical disc quality wise, i think in order for the cd to be able to rated at 16x, the quality has to be much better than one rated for just 8x.

I don't think it matters what speed it is rated because they usually are manufacturing the highest speed that players can record at. I think what the speed rating is for is to verify that it can record at that speed. Sometimes different drives will record better at certain speeds than others. I have heard this of some 4x drives that burned better at 4x than 1x. The most important quality you want to look for is the stability of the dye. Some disks simply arent going to last as long as others. This may not make a big deal to someone backing up programs (that will be obsolete soon), but music, data, and media should get a longlife disk. Below are valuable resources;
