Differences between these routers?

Buffalo Technology AirStation Turbo G High Power Wireless Ethernet Converter (WLI-TX4-G54HP)

Have both; wondering which is better to use in my home network and which to return.

Wondering what the differences are.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

What are you going to use it for?
The first one is a wired/wireless router/switch. The second one is a wired/wireless switch. It depends on what you are going to do.
The first one is more versatile as its a router/switch not just a switch.

Wireless is N draft on the first one G on the second.

and the WLI-TX4-G54HP? Do they do the same thing?
The WLI-TX4-G54HP is basically a bridge that you would use to make Ethernet devices wireless. You would use it if you wanted to add a device to your existing network.

Both the WHR-HP-G54 & the Nfiniti are routers or can be used as access points.

What are you trying to do?

WHR-HP-G54 is an High Power 802.11g that consider by many as the Best 802.11g Wireless Router.

If you notice the Price on the linked page, it is am attempt to make money on an item that is currently Not avalible on the free market,

The inFiniti is a Draft-N Wireless Router.

If you do not Know fro g to N read this, http://www.ezlan.net/Wireless_Hardware.html

They're probably very similar under the covers, but the advertised feature set is very different.

The wireless router is something like a "base station" -- it provides the path to the Internet, and a wireless access point for all the wireless clients to connect to.

The "Ethernet Converter" is a wireless client mode bridge -- it works as a wireless client of the main wireless router / access point, and then shares that wireless connection to all the locally wired clients. In other words, if have one or more devices with wired ports in a location where you can't easily run a wire to from the main router, you can connect them wirelessly using such a device.

So the two devices typically work together as a team, and one doesn't replace the other.

(However, the WHR-HP-G54 can do everything that the WLI-TX4-G54HP can when it's configured with third-party firmware like DD-WRT which enables that client mode bridging functionality. It can also do more than the WLI-TX4-G54HP can do out of the box. As a further kicker, it is possible to flash the WLI-TX4-G54HP with third-party firmware, and enable some of the functionality it doesn't have out of the box, but does have as potential because of the similar underlying hardware. However, all this is in the deep end, and I think I should say that if you didn't understand the difference between the two differences in the first place, you should probably stay away from mucking around at this level and risking "bricking" your devices.)

I currently have a Belkin Wireless router for my home wireless network. I am also using a 3Com router as my firewall since I heard that Belkins aren't the greatest.

I figure I can replace both of those with one *decent* router/firewall. I recently purchased a Linksys WRT54G and am trying to decide whether to keep that or use one of these Buffalo's.

I've heard that the Buffalo's have a better range.

Since you went & bought them, you should do your own speed test, and see which one is best.

Download either DU Meter or Iperf, and test away!!

LOL. I'm too cheap; gonna return the one I don't want. I guess Circuit City *might* take back the Buffalo if it's opened, but Staples won't 'cause it's past their 30-day window.

If it's a WRT54G version 5 or later, then it has 1/2 the RAM and 1/2 the flash RAM of earlier versions and the Buffalo -- so I'd suggest returning it if possible.

Any way to tell version on the WRT54G without opening it? Serial #, UPC, etc.?

usually on the bottom of the router, it'll say like v3, v4 or somethen like that.

Ah, ok. I was looking on the box and on the back of the unit.

It's a "V8", so I guess I'll be returning it and going with a Buffalo.

Should I go with the:
Buffalo Wireless-n Nfiniti Broadband Router & Access Point with Aoss
or the
Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 Wireless-G MIMO Performance Router and Access Point ?

It is very exciting to deal with Merchandizing.

Sooner o later you would have to deal with Technology and we have No clue how you use the Network what you need the Wireless for?

So if you want solid help you should start to learn and think technology.
