Differences between 8.1 and 7

It's Not Lupus

Senior member
What are the 'under the hood' differences between 8.1 and 7? Lately, I'm thinking about going back to 7 or maybe installing a third party start menu.

Mostly better hardware support, better performance when you compare a Haswell CPU on Windows 8 where it is slightly lower in performance on Windows 7.

Also better SSD support and about 10% better performance when benchmarking SSDs.

That's the only thing that keeps me on Windows 8.1 otherwise everything else Windows 7 wins, as in GUI, better Wireless network management, more stable OS

What you describe as a "delta" between OS versions seems miniscule to the difference between VISTA-64 and Win7-64. When I first experienced the latter difference, I had to rub my eyes in worry that I was "seeing things."

GUI is relative to user in question as to network and stability its been 100% solid for me on both my systems so don't know where you get that idea from and that's with both my video and CPU overclocked.

I should also point out improved security over Win7,plus mainstream support ends on Win7 in Jan 2015.

It's Not Lupus third party Start menu mod is probably best option IMHO then wait until next year for Win9 and see what that brings to the table.

Better security? how? they're the same, 8 offers nothing more than 7 in terms of security other than a more annoying UAC

Windows 8 has the app store along with the changed home menu and home screen buttons.

I would much rather stick with my WIndows 7 Ultimate than change. After this computer goes in about 5-10 years I might end up switching to a mac because of the fact they are keeping their OS consistent.

Windows 8.1 Pro
Hyper-V
Storage Spaces
Bitlocker
Refined Applocker support
Faster boot up
Inbuilt MSE
Can reformat without having to use recovery CD (done from GUI in Windows) or re-activate the product
Improved transfer dialog
Secure Boot

All built-in MS utilities are a non issue as far as I'm concerned. They all suck way too much to be of any use or value.

Improvements to heap/memory exploits, low level kernel changes, MSE actually now supports an ELAM driver, bits and pieces hardened up etc. You were saying? 7 is primitive now. Move on. All the new shiny tech bits won't be backported after next January. Its hilarious businesses moving to 7 just as it exits mainstream supports. 8.1 is supported until 2018.

The only place I'll agree is notepad.exe. I read logfiles for work that can be up to 50MB in size, and anything over a few K in notepad just is awful. But that's what Notepad2 and Notepad++ is used for.

awesome! Typing this on event more primitive Vista. You must feel pity for me.
Technical improvements under the hood mean little when OS gives impression it is difficult to use to everybody.

business know better, and sheer number of them will force MS to support Windows 7 until 9 is well into use cycle.

Hell, we had new Windows XP licenses as late as last year.

I never listen to business since half of them are clueless anyway and when I say I don't listen to them that goes way back before Windows XP days, even with Win9,10,11 etc I won't listen to them,I know what I like and what is good for me.
