What are the 'under the hood' differences between 8.1 and 7? Lately, I'm thinking about going back to 7 or maybe installing a third party start menu.
Mostly better hardware support, better performance when you compare a Haswell CPU on Windows 8 where it is slightly lower in performance on Windows 7.
Also better SSD support and about 10% better performance when benchmarking SSDs.
That's the only thing that keeps me on Windows 8.1 otherwise everything else Windows 7 wins, as in GUI, better Wireless network management, more stable OS

I should also point out improved security over Win7,plus mainstream support ends on Win7 in Jan 2015.
Better security? how? they're the same, 8 offers nothing more than 7 in terms of security other than a more annoying UAC
Everything that makes Windows Windows is a Microsoft utility, now I'm wondering why you use Windows? All built-in MS utilities are a non issue as far as I'm concerned. They all suck way too much to be of any use or value.

Improvements to heap/memory exploits, low level kernel changes, MSE actually now supports an ELAM driver, bits and pieces hardened up etc. You were saying? 7 is primitive now. Move on. All the new shiny tech bits won't be backported after next January. Its hilarious businesses moving to 7 just as it exits mainstream supports. 8.1 is supported until 2018.
awesome! Typing this on event more primitive Vista. You must feel pity for me.
Technical improvements under the hood mean little when OS gives impression it is difficult to use to everybody.
business know better, and sheer number of them will force MS to support Windows 7 until 9 is well into use cycle.
Hell, we had new Windows XP licenses as late as last year.
