Difference WD Caviar RE vs. Caviar SE

What's the difference between Caviar SE and RE SATA 150 Hard Drives?

I don't have all the detail info, but the RE version is the "RAID Edition" and carries a higher price premium over the SE version of the same drive.

yea, the RE edition will only work in a RAID configuration.

Wrong! It's not recomended for non RAID use by Western Digital but it can be used on it's own.

I wasn't aware that there is such a thing as RAID or Non-RAID designed HDD. All along I thought the only thing hdd's know is either to read or write data. How does a HDD knows when it is in RAID configuration or not? Jumpers? Software? Are there any other hdd out there that are designed for RAID only configuration.
