Hi w00t,
they're both rated the same (ie . 490 joules) so.. basically it's which one do you like the best or can you find a consumer report/guide on the brand name. "Protector" & "arrestor" are often used interchangeably
Hope this helps

Get one that says if the equipment you're protecting get damaged they'll pay the difference.
Also get from a reliable company that's been around for a while, so they can actually be around pay you.
I think Belkin is fine, you may want to look into their small UPSs.

I am looking at newegg they have "Joule Rating" is the higher the better and than they have "EMI/RFI Noise Filter" i dont want anything noisy anything higher than 40db would take over my computer at 32dB.

Actually (for Belkin, anyway) if the Joules that are charged through the system are higher than their guaranteed protection, they won't pay you the difference. That's why I got a 2655 Joule one. ;)

So I'd recommend this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16812120232

Or this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16812120239

It's a small investment for insuring your computer against major spikes. Now, it won't help against a DIRECT bolt of lightning, but everything else is fine.

Oh, well for those, I suppose you'd want a UPS so your files don't get corrupted from low voltage problems. Those usually run $100. I personally don't have them, but then again in Boston you're not going to get too many brownouts.

Well if your lights dimmed then that's a sign of lowered power, or voltage, or whatever. I'm no electrician, but random blackouts can corrupt your data. UPSs (Uninterruptable Power Supplies) can power your system long enough for you to shut it down safely without risk of data (or some hardware) corruption.
