What do you guys think about relatively big differences in age with regard to relationships/dating/etc.?

20 and 40?
25 and 40?
20 and 30?

20 and 40 is a big difference, but 22 and 40 is not.

it's not neccessarily about age as much as it is about where you are in life. your average 40 year-old probably has much different priorities than your average 20 year-old who's still in college.

(for full disclosure, I'm 22 and currently pursuing a relationship with a 33 year-old ;))

And different taste, different expectations, etc. Seems like it would be a big problem. I don't think I could even imagine dating a 16 year old.

How's that going?

I've got no problems with it.
24 interested in a 30yo.It's not a huge difference or anything, but it "bugs" her.

I don't know about 40/22. Nowadays that just seems kind of creepy. I know there are relationships that have a much bigger gap than that, but it just gives me the 'robbing the cradle' vibes. I'm 24 by the way, so my perspective may be different than some other people.

I think when you hit 25, a 10 year or less age difference makes sense IMHO.

Edit: and by that I mean going UP...I wouldn't recommend a 25 year old date a 15 year old!!

As someone said, 1/2 plus 7 for the oldest.

Start at 14 at the earliest (14/2 = 7, +7 = 14)

So all are wrong, but not by too much

20 and 40? 40 = 27, 7 years off, too much
25 and 40? 40 = 27, only 2 years off/ Almost OK.
20 and 30? 30 = 22. 2 years off / Almost OK

Well everyone knows the 1/2 + 7 rule, but I think it's a bit simplistic to say that that's the complete solution to the issue.

I didn't, it was always 1/2 + 9 for me. :Q

1/2+9?!? Then you can't start dating until 18 by that rule. :(

I think once the younger end gets past about 23-25 it makes alot less difference, but it really depends alot on the people involved, and where they are in their lives. I've met people older then I am (I'm 35) that I wouldn't consider dating due to maturity issues.

Just a general guideling on when the other person is too young for you. There have been a few "I'm 22 and want to date a 16 year old high schooler" threads. But that 6 years difference in age is completely different from a 40 year old dating a 34 year old.

So take your age (or theirs if they are older ;)) divide by 2 and add 7. It is amazingly close to what most people consider an acceptable age gap in a couple.

14 = 14
15 = 14.5
16 = 15
17 = 15.5
18 = 16
19 = 16.5
20 = 17
21 = 17.5
22 = 18
23 = 18.5
24 = 19
25 = 19.5
26 = 20
27 = 20.5
28 = 21
29 = 21.5
30 = 22
31 = 22.5
32 = 23
33 = 23.5
34 = 24
35 = 24.5
36 = 25
37 = 25.5
38 = 26
39 = 26.5
40 = 27
etc.

I dunno ... I can't see myself dating a 56 year old woman. 25 years old ... maybe :p

Depends on the people involved and their respective life situations, maturity level, etc.

I'm 24 and my wife is 34, but we're very compatible and focused on doing the same things with our lives.
