Difference between XP & MP?

What technically is defferent about the XP vx MP besides packaging, if the same core, that makes XP hundreds less in cost than the MP?

AMD Athlon XP 1800+/266 FSB PROCESSOR CPU - OEM $210.00

AMD Athlon MP 1800 1.53 GHz PROCESSOR CPU - OEM $268.00

hundred of dollars? More like $50-60

Its GUARENTEED to work in a multiprocessor system. athlon xp isnt

I was watching retail prices.

Athlon 1800 XP: 209usd

Athlon 1800 MP: 315usd

So 100bux for comfort sake.. 🙂

MP has "smart MP technology" and is guaranteed to work in a dual configuration.

Has anyone heard this is no longer the case?

Also, what do you all mean by "unlocked?" Unlocked to be OCed? Or do you need to unlock XPs to be able to use them in an SMP configuration?

Thanks!

MP = multiprocessor, I think it may have been made with a better bus management system, since AMD uses point to point FSB in MP configurations, I'm guessing this may have upped the manufacturing cost a little.
XP = cheap marketing ploy aimed to leech of Microsoft's relatively successful XP line of products (Office, Windows). It's the same as the MP but without the multiprocessing capability (although some have claimed to have gotten one that could go in a MP solution).

Also, remember that most of the prices is marketing. The XP line is targeted at consumers and OEM's where price matters a lot while the MP is targeted towards businesses and small firms. It's prolly the same reason Intel charges $200 for 100 more MHz. It isn't neccessary, it's just marketing.

Dude, everyone knows that XP's can be used in multiprocessor systems.

Posted on a Tyan TigerMP system running dual AthlonXP 1600's

....but maybe one or some legs on the XP may broken for detection how XP and not working with multi processors Mother Boards. (on new motherboards i`m think)

To set the record straight, the motherboards based on the 760MP (Tyan) work fine with XP's. The 760MPX disables the use of XP chips at least as far as the most recent reports demonstrate. The MP chips also come multiplier unlocked. That means that the L1 bridges are "intact" allowing multiplier adjustments in the BIOS. For those wary of the XP unlocking procedure, this might be worth the added cost.

Athlon MP's- multiprocessor unlocked XP's that have been through quality control test to guarantee that they will work in a multiprocessor environment.

Athlon XP's- at the begining they were unlocked to be used in multiprocessor sys., but may or may not still be that way. They also go through a different quality control test so they are not guaranteed to work in a multiprocessor system.

<< MP has "smart MP technology" and is guaranteed to work in a dual configuration >>

Smart MP Technology is more a function of the chipset and doesn't really have anything to do with XP vs. MP. Smart MP design dedicates a full bus from the Northbridge to each processor as opposed to a shared bus architecture.

As already stated XP's and MP's are the same except for the MP's being multiplier unlocked and guaranteed by AMD to work in SMP. I have two XP 1600's working just fine on a Tyan Tiger MP.
