Difference between Pioneer DVD-ROM 106S and 106S/2?

From what I see, the 106s are made in Japan and the 106/2 are made in China (mostly). So, quality might differ and the China version might not have laser memory.

I have the Pioneer 106S/2 ..........oem, mfg. December 2001 ........... very plain generic looking bezel (front panel).
The NewEgg picture of the 106S looks more like a retail version (although the ad does read oem) it appears to read "Lazer Memory" and something else on the bezel...............

Since the 106S/2 is cheaper, my guess is it's possibly sourced out to a different mfg. and just uses the basic Pioneer (internals) drive and possibly has cheaper optics or ........... something.???
