ExpressCard interface uses a PCI-Ex1 channel and a USB channel. PCCard/PCMCIA is uses a different interface that is slower than expresscard.

do you know if this is becoming more mainstream and if laptops are already using the express card over the pc card technology?

'cuz I am reading this thing on cnet about the x-fi going on the laptop and that they'll be hitting up the express card versus the audigy 2 zs which used the pc card slot.

anyone clarify?

The expresscard slot has pretty much taken over. Some smaller laptops (like mine) dont have any card slots, but I really have no need for it. The external DAC would be nice, but isnt necessary. Some laptops, like my roommates have both the old and the new, but more and more they are switching over to ExpressCard only.
