Its kind of technical but the easiest way to explain it is that the 800 series are designed to use more processors on the motherboard.

opteron 1xx can have 1 cpu per board while the 2xx can do 2 and so on.

yeah, its because of their scalability (in terms of multiple processors) The ability to have 16 cores working so efficiently together is well worth the price...
