Difference between DVI-I and DVI-D?

I purchased a used, Sony LCD Rear-Projection TV, last night.

It has a DVI port but I was unable to use a DVI to VGA adapter. The adapter wouldn't physically fit in the TV's DVI connector.

It isn't HDMI, it's a DVI-D connection, while the DVI-VGA adapter was to be used with DVI-I (I snagged it from my computer's video card).

The Sony model number is: KF-50WE610

DVI-D requires a DVI-D or DVI-I port to feed it. DVI-I carries both analogue and digital signals.

My question is if DVI-D and DVI-I connectors are physically different.

My DVI-I to VGA adapter would not fit in the back of my TV, which is DVI-D.

What are you trying to accomplish?

You can't use a simple adapter to go from VGA to DVI.

The only reason DVI-I to VGA adapters work is that VGA is part of the DVI-I signal.

DVI-D is different from VGA.

DVI-D to VGA = not easy
DVI-I to VGA = easy
VGA to DVI-D = not easy <-- what you are trying?
VGA to DVI-I = not easy

That wont work from just a regular RGB output.

If your laptop doesn't have tv-out you're going to need some type of USB device to get tv-out or you'll need a relatively expensive converter to change the signal afaik.

They make DVI to component adapters for ATI cards, which just output a component signal on the DVI port.

Like the DVI to component adapters, I think those only work with certain cards that have a mode where it outputs a component signal through DVI or VGA pins. On its own DVI or VGA doesn't have component imbedded within it from a regular output.

I think the VGA to component adapters only work with the Radeon 8500 and similar cards.

If a cheap adapter like that worked, everyone would have one for tv-out.
