Difference between Athlon XP and MP?

Well, I'm confused. The prices are different, but what's different in the architecture? I just got my XP1800+ and WCPUID it telling me it's an "Athlon MP". Funny. Can't you use dual XP's anyway in an MP-supported board and vice versa? 😕

MP is tested and certified to run in a multi-processor setup. It is also factory (multiplier) unlocked.

The XP and MP are identical except that the MP is certified for use in multiprocessor systems. The XP will work just as well but it isn't "certified" so you wont get any kind of warranty if something were to go wrong.

There's no difference. Certification is mostly bs. The MP is a ripoff when you can get an XP for a lot less dough.

Main difference: the letters XP aligns with Windows XP marketing...making people think they go hand in hand.

One could reword that and say AMD is very generous by not disabling SMP on the XPs 🙂.

Are all MP CPU's still using ceramic packaging? All XP's have the organic packaging, they are lighter and runs cooler.

My Duron 1Ghz MP wasn't factory unlocked

Did they actually release the MP Durons? Haven't seen one so far.

Loooong time ago. The MP Duron came out at the same time as the Palomino. You know, the Morgan core ... the 1Ghz, 1.2Ghz and now 1.3Ghz. Check Pricewatch. Those are all Duron MPs.
