Difference between Athlon MP vs XP

What technically is defferent about the XP vx MP besides packaging, if the same core, that makes XP hundreds less in cost than the MP?

the MP is "certified" for smp operation, and the XP isn't. if you work for a big company, and you have an XP that doesn't work in SMP, you lose your job. if you buy an MP though, and it doesn't work, your boss goes and yells at AMD.

edit: oops, i think this is the wrong forum. i shouldn't have answered, but rather said "try CPU/procs & overclocking" 😉

Just to add, there is currently no difference packaging or other wise between the two with the exception that the MP is guaranteed to work in SMP.

From what I heard, the MP also has some architectural differences, HW support for snooping or something being the main one I think.

I believe there are IDENTICAL except if MP not working on an SMP board will be replaced while an XP will not.

i believe the difference is "smart MP" technology... i have no clue what that means if anything at all... marketing dept scheme...

There is no difference between the chips at all, AMD does not make a seperate core for the XP. When a CPU core is made it is not known how high the MHz will ramp and how stable it will be... So after being manufactured they are tested, they are sold at the highest MHz they were able to run at stablely, and X-number of the ones that were able to run in duel configuration stablaly are marked 'MP'. There is no architectual difference... Please refer to the technical documents.
