Difference b/t Shockwave and Flash?

shockwave was the original program and i think is more powerful than flash. flash's full name is shockwave flash. then theres director.

takes forever to down, just some 'advanced' images to show off ur fancy whatevers.
i hate them cuz they take forever to dl (dialup users here) and often times they are pointless.
why can't we stick to basic html people?
