The problem is that in the US, diesel fuel is much more expensive than regular gasoline. It's as expensive as premium, which negates all your fuel savings due to higher fuel economy.

Not even close. Here diesel is the same as premium, which makes it 10% more than regular.
A 2004 E320 gasser gets 19/27mpg
a new E320 diesel gets 27/37

That's 37-42%

A Jetta TDI 38/46
Jetta 1.8 Turbo 24/31

48-58%

At 20k miles/yr. $2.29 diesel, $2.05 regular (YMMV)
Jetta (42mpg) diesel fuel cost $1090
Gasser (28mpg) $1464

Would you really notice $400 in gas spread out over a whole year?

Diesel is also better in the long run-many diesels over 200k miles, some to 500k.

Would you go to a gas staion that had gas for $1.40 vs $2.10 for everyone else?

15 gallons of Diesel will get me 650 miles. so at $2.44 a gallon that's $36.60 Unleaded is running $2.36 a gallon, you need almost two 15 gallon tanks to go 650 miles in a Corolla or Civic so which is Cheaper.

Your ID also reminds me... GM made 5.7L V8 Diesels from 77-85 and 4.3L V6 Diesels from 81-85. They were used in FWD and RWD Passenger cars.

They got a bad rap because people didn't know how to care for them and drive them. i have seen people that have rebuilt them and upgraded the head and crank studs and have 200K - 300K on them.

I have 145,000 on my 7.3

Something's wrong with your math... Jetta TDI can get 45+MPG... I know I pay about 10% extra because my car requires premium and I only get 32MPG (still not too bad compared to many).
$2.41 (what I paid 2 days ago) / 32 MPG = $0.075 per mile
$2.35 (what the same place wanted for diesel) / 45 MPG = $0.052 per mile
Even assuming the same price...
$2.41 / 45 = $0.054 per mile

That's about a 30% savings over gas. We've been considering a Jetta TDI so I've been looking at this. Funny I had the same argument thrown at me a year ago when I went to my current daily driver. "But that requires premium... you'll pay so much for fuel". But what the people who can't see the forest for the trees don't realize is I was going from ~20MPG to 32. 10% more in $ < 60% improvement in fuel economy. The only reason to switch is she really wants a Jetta. I say if we're going to do it, let's go to the TDI and save even more...

What about Jeep Liberty ?

also, i heard an engineer talk about why a gas/hybrid isn't that great an idea for long highway driving. You carry the extra weight of the batteries, and you aren't using the stop part of stop and go driving as a free way to keep them charged up.

The old benz 5 zyl. diesel engines will run over a million miles occasionally.

woah at first from this thread, i was thinking that ANY jetta could run on diesel fuel heh. i have a 97 jjetta and just put in regular. would be cool if it could take both 😛

They got a bad rap cause they were a crappy design. They were basically a 350ci gasoline engine with a few minor changes to run on diesel. They lacked the things that make a diesel engine powerful and efficient. They had low compression, low fuel pressure, inefficient combustion chambers for diesel fuel ignition, and used a throttle body to control engine RPM rather than fuel flow, which greatly effected the fuel efficiency.
