hey,

I have a p4 2.4 533 no ht chip that i've been running @ 3.6 for 1.5 years on a vapochill rig.. it seems to be dieing as i have had to pull it back to 3gig for it to be stabe so i'm thinking i might replace it..

should i get a 3+gig prescot 1mb cache with ht (this would be the simpler option)

or should i throw it in and replace the motherboard and cpu for an amd system

i mostly use it for gaming and i know amd is better for this..

the rest of the system
Abit Ic7-g MaxII motherboard
4 x 256 corsair bh5
6800 le 12x6

i don't really have a load to spend however....

Going for a replacement 3.06 533fsb unless someone tells me otherwise!

he he i know it is getting a little old... i'd like a nice shinny nf4 system really

if it was just new moterboard new cpu that would be cool, but i'd be looking at a new graphics card as well i guess as this ones agp, + a convertion kit for the vapochill system so it's going to cost a fair bit more too change the system, is it worth it? will i see that much of a difference?

you could get a 3.4E and OC on the vapochill (reach ~4Ghz)

But I'd suggest a Venice with an AGP 939 board (you have a nice GFX card)

You don't know if his board will support it or not.

ok so you think its worth it, yeah i don't really nee to replace the card, but then buying a 939 board with agp seems a bit daft huh..

but then it does make it more finacially viable! so which agp 939 would you suggest as obviously nf4 is out as there all pci-e right? I'd want one that can overclock very well....

Well do you think that you could stick with your same GFX card for a few years? I dont think there will be much beyond a 6800U/X800XT for AGP.

Dual core 939s should be a good upgrade path, but only if you can deal with your AGP or afford a new GFX card now.

For a 939 w/AGP, an NForce 3 Ultra should work. Im not sure about specifics, but I like the MSI Neo2.

BTW, beautiful OC you have there.

hmm i think the answer to that might be no, the graphics card is the part i've upgraded most often, though it's working fine for me just now

Can't he get a 3.4C p4 and call it a day? Or a 3.06?

yup thats the simpler option!

I'd get a 3.06ghz 533fsb chip, or a 3ghz northwood over a 3ghz prescott.

might be hard to get hold of one, y would you go for northwood over prescot ? because of heat? i take it you have a prescot though so are you not happy wth it?

I recomend the northwood, because clock for clock the northwood is still a bit faster than the prescott, and I definatly had some huge heat issues with my 3.4ghz prescott. I also have a 3.2 engineering sample, which only runs a little warmer than my northwood, and had a 2.8 prescott @3.5ghz that again ran only about 5-10c higher than my northwood, but the 3.4 running at over 70c and throttling with one of the best heatsinks out there, makes it very very difficult to ever recomend a prescott to anyone. 2 of my 3 were fine, but it seems to be hit or miss, some of them run so hot, they don't run at their rated speed do to throttling. I am about to rebuild a system with my 3.06ghz northwood. I never had any temp problems with it, even with the retail heatsink and fan, and until you get to about 3.5ghz with a prescott, the northwood performs better.

bearing in mind that i have a vapochill system this should help, though i can imagin the precott might melt the poor compressor.. it is only the standard edition.. 130 Watts this should at least keep the processor away from throttling i would guess

even so you think the limit might be 3.5 for a prescott? thats lower than i had my 2.4c!
so you would recommend the fastest northwood i can find then?

I suppose with vapochill heat won't be an issue even with a prescott, but even with liquid cooling my 3.4 prescott runs hotter than my 3.06ghz northwood does on air. My 2.8 probably could have gone higher than 3.5ghz, I was limited by my ram, and was just using air cooling with it, just seems like any prescott at 3.2 or higher, has a higher chance of getting a chip that runs way too hot. They don't all seem to have that problem, since my 2.8 and my 3.2es didn't have heat issues like my 3.4, but never had issues with any of my northwoods.
