I interviewed for a Courier/Assistant job today for the CEO of a private company here in Birmingham(They have a Billion of revenue every year). It would have been a great job, because the owner is very well politically connected, and sits on the board of every University in the State. I did a phone interview on Thursday, and came in today to meet the with the manager of personnel and HR. Well, I interviewed with him, and he said he was impressed with my knowledge of the company and my prior experience at a job that was very similar. He said he thought I had a very good chance of getting the job, and that he would personally recommend me to the Executive VP. Well, I was supposed to meet with the Executive VP, but he was called into a meeting with the owner and CEO of the company, so the HR Manager told me to call him back on his Cell Phone around 2PM.
I called him about 1:55PM, and he told me what had gone down since I left. The VP was going to be in the meeting all day, and he told his Secretary to make the decision. The HR guy told her that he really wanted her to meet me, because I was the "ideal" candidate for the job in his opinion. She said that she didn't have time today, and that she was going to hire someone she had already interviewed. The HR guy told me he begged her to at least talk to me for 5 minutes on the phone, but she said she didn't have the time. He apologized to me, because he thought I would get the job for sure, and he told him to call him back in a few weeks to make sure the person they hired was going to work out. He also said that he would like to see me work for the company period, and that I should call him back periodically to see if there was any position he could put me in.
I really wanted the job, because I would have been working directly for the CEO, and he has a habit of giving his workers recommendations and pulling strings to get them into whatever law or grad school they are applying to in the state, and he also has limited influence in other states and internationally. I guess it is good that the HR guy recommended me and the he wants me to call him back. I guess by what he said that I would have gotten the job, but that the Secretary didn't want to take 5 minutes out of her day to talk to me. Is it good that he wants me to call back to him every few weeks for other openings? Is that a standard brush off line, or does it mean that he really wants me to get a position there?
The job would have consisted of me running personal and family errands for the family that owns the business and basically doing their "bidding." The examples he gave me were buying beer for them to take to their private parties, or to the country club, etc. Picking up packages at their airport hanger, cashing checks for them at the bank(i.e. Mr. D would give me a check for 5k and ask me to get the cash and bring it back). He said confidentiality was a must, and that I would be working closely with their family, so I could not mention to anyone what went on at their homes or at their business. Like I said, it is a fairly large corporation that went international over the past 10 years, and they own tons of land and the like in my state. The family is the true essence of a billionaire empire, and the connections I would have made would have served me greatly down the road. I guess you can't win them all, but I was looking forward to getting my foot in the door. All I can hope for is something else to open up, or the other hire to screw up and them hire me after his trial period.
