A row has been taking place in Australia over a controversial farming practice, where skin is sheared from sheep to protect them from maggot infestation.

Animal rights campaigners Peta believe mulesing is extremely cruel

Twelve months ago, most Australians had not heard of a sheep-farming procedure known as "mulesing".

But now thanks to a row between the world's largest animal rights organisation, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta) and Australian wool growers, they have been brought up to speed pretty quickly.

Mulesing is named after John Mules, who developed the practice in the 1930s as a way to prevent what is known as "flystrike".

This occurs when blowflies lay eggs in the folds of skin around the sheep's back side. When this happens, the hatched maggots can eat the sheep alive.

Cutting off the loose flesh leaves an area of smooth, wool-free skin, which prevents maggot infestations.

The procedure is carried out using metal shears and no pain killers. But Ian McLachlan of Australian Wool Innovation, the industry's research group, said: "It's short-term pain for lifelong immunity and stops the sheep being eaten alive."

During the mulesing operation, there is no outward sign the sheep are in distress, but according to Temple Grantin, Professor of Animal Science at Colorado State University: "Sheep are a prey species animal, and they tend to cover up the fact that they're hurt.

"They don't want to advertise to all the dingoes out there that they're injured."

"[But] if you go in and measure the sheep's stress hormones, they're off the charts."

Mulesing first came to the attention of US-based Peta last year when it saw a video of a sheep being mulesed.

One billboard showing graphic footage of a mulesing operation so shocked New Yorkers that it had to be taken down.

"Did your sweater cause a bloody butt?" ran the slogan, "Boycott Australian wool".

So they basically peel the skin off the sheep's ass, and then when it heals it's flyproof?

oh, i must agree with PETA on this, having maggots eat you alive through your butt hole is much more "ethical" than shaving off some skin.

this should definetly be stopped, the sheep would surely prefer to have maggots eat their buttholes than have a sheep farmer save them by cutting off some skin. sure

Its dumb to think just because they are animals they somehow feel less pain. If someone sheared your ass, wouldnt it hurt?

Was this always a problem? What did shepherds do before the 1930's to keep sheep from having maggot problems?

Wouldnt it be worse to have your butt eaten by maggots.

Im sure they could find a more painfree way of doing it. This is just the 1930's way. Following that logic, would you want some sort of surgical procedure done in the 1930's? I wouldnt.

Thats not the point, obviously maggots suck, but why not find a less painful way of doing it.

Basically they shear off the skin so that the new skin forming is scar tissue. So you dont want fleas so lets shear your dogs body! Instead of giving it a flea collar or a drop of medicine.

Ummm....am I missing something? Last I heard maggots will only eat dead and dying flesh, not healthy living flesh. So how do these maggots "eat the sheep alive"?

next time you have to have something done surgical because you will be better after, let's just skip the anesthesia part, mkay?

You are part of the problem this issues get so fuxored. Yes it helps the sheep...but for an animal meant to be eventually slaughtered, causing extra stress and pain in it's short life is not a real ethical thing to do.

Wanna profit though, just shear off all the offending bits, they won't die if you cauterize it.

I agree, you have a good point. I think they use this method due to cost. In a perfect world no living being should have to suffer but unforunately we don't.

THe article specifically says that they are developing chemical solutions now.
Read it.

The problem isn't that they are being immunized against flies. The problem is that it's being done cruelly to save money.

Cut off the folds of your belly fatty, and see if it's a few seconds of pain.

I'm sure all maggots don't follow the course of nature. As we type these messages somewhere a small group of them is organizing a resistance to take over the world. :D
