I repaired video game consoles for 2 ½ years at FuncoLand. Those top loaders were not very popular, but they sure worked a lot better. They?re a good find for classic video game fans.
The contact sets on the old front loading NES were a nightmarishly bad design, with little to no ?self cleaning? action when the cart is inserted. That?s why there were so many rituals, like clicking the game up and down 12 times, which causes some mechanical friction to wear through the oxidation on the contacts, or blowing on the contacts, where the moisture from your breath helps make a better connection. A decent cleaning kit from Naki works wonders. When the cleaning kits stop working on the old NES, you can order brand new replacement sets of contacts from MCM Electronics, but they?re kind of a b*tch to install. Those old things are built like tanks compared to almost every other console out there.
