Man... I hate this. Same thing w/ every single desk. The surface that you use your mouse on gets eroded after a couple years and your mouse starts to skip around that area. I hate it. I was working on Photoshop and needed to get a shape in defined dimensions and because of this skipping thing, it took over a minute to get it :|
 
You should get a mouse surface, especially if you're doing image work. There are some made out steel and glass if you really don't want them to wear down (but they tend to be cold).

Just a piece of paper? That'll be better than struggling for 1 minute to get one shape. Sure you wouldn't want to use paper forever, but it'll get you through your bind.
 
My optical mouse works great on my cheap Ikea workstation. Some of the paint is peeling off of the surface, but it still works fine.
 
Hey, I have a flakeboard desk, that has held a heavy full tower and a 19" monitor for the past five years without sagging, and before that it was a work desk for a decade. That thing is a tank.

Lets see...the one most highly recommended by tomshardware was the x-ray pad thunder 8 sold at thinkgeek (its plastic but it won't wear down that quickly). Then there's icemat (made out of glass), func 1030(plastic, similar to x-ray), and steelpad (aluminum) all sold at newegg.

I don't get it. Why don't you just use a mouse pad? Unless you're talking about the sweaty/friction rub from your wrist on the side of the desk...but that shouldn't effect the accuracy of the mouse, just the asthetics of your desk.

Because most mousepads suck. They aren't very accurate when it comes to a pixel 🙂 I am going to try those special mousepads Chronoshock suggested 🙂

Your pice of formica countertop probably won't stand 4 23" CRT monitors, would it? Ok :roll:
 
Oh btw, you might want to consider getting some teflon tape for the bottom of your mouse (especially if you use the icemat or steelpad as they do make some sound when you move across it without tape). Most mouse/mouse pad companies offer expensive "mouse skates" which are essentially just strips of teflon tape. I imagine general teflon tape works just as well and it can be purchased at most hardware stores as it is generally used for plumbing work.

And your desktop is better? My desktop has cookie crumbs and water all over it most of the time so I prefer the pad myself. I'd just go to a hardware store or something and get a 1x1' square of formica.
