My job required a 4-year degree. They didn't really care what it was, honestly.

Although this is generally true, the flip side to this is when chopping time comes around, mid level managers are usually the first to go. I've heard the phrase that larger engineering/tech companies breed managers like rats in a dumpster. A competent technical guy is dual purpose, you can always promote him to be a manager later, but it doesn't really work in reverse where you can make a manager a good engineer again.
