Magnetic fields can be "blocked" with the use of a material with very high permeability, like Mumetal.

I don't think it really blocks the magnetism - those neodymium magnets just have really tightly confined magnetic fields. Their influence is very concentrated close to their faces.

Does anyone know what the metal is on hard drive covers that blocks the magnetism?
Or if it is even a metal at all?

Just got some of these magnets, and they are super strong

The hard drive cover is aluminum and has no effect on the magnetic flux from the neodymium magnet. The metal bracket/holder attached to the magnet tightly controls where the flux goes.
