Did you play Unreal and/or Quake 2?

Post comments about each game. Add comments also on expasions played.

I have played a bit of Unreal right about the time in the beginning where all the lights went out and you had to fight this dude. Scary. I passed that, but don't remember where I left off.

I haven't played Quake 2 the Single Player, just he Multiplayer.

I want to get these games for the single player experience, just wanna know opinions.

Both are merely OK(if you even go that far) by today's standards. They are pre HL titles and it shows. For Q2 I also have Ground Zero, The Reckoning and the Extremeties pack(IIRC it was the Q2 'Quad Damage' pack or something like that). Worth playing through IMO(mainly for their historical impact), but they both feel very retro at this point.

Unreal is one of the best games I've ever played and even today it has outstanding graphics and map design. The expansion pack is very decent too though it felt a little rushed at the end.

Quake II is a solid game too though not quite as good as Unreal. Its mission packs are excellent and I actually enjoyed them more than the original game.

BTW, if you pick up the Totally Unreal pack you'll get Unreal, Return to Na Pali and UT in one package.

i played quake 2, is was sweet, graphics were the best for it time hehe, i still remember how that plane crashed and u why u gotta investigate the city lol

Unreal is one of the only PC games that I've ever finished. I have to agree with BFG that it is a great game. It was a lot longer than I thought it would be and you never knew when a Skaarj would jump out and try to hack you to bits. 🙂 Didn't play Quake 2 that much but the multiplayer was good. Gamma was really dark at default on a lot of the maps though. And the default rotation on multiplayer had some maps that were kinda "bleh", especially since I was never good at setting up a batch file to rotate the maps of my choice. Although, the final boss map rocks. My first LAN experience was playing that map. 🙂

I played Q2. yes, it was the first thing I played with 3d acceleration on 800x600. hhehehe... It was pretty solid but somewhat too easy for me. The expansion packs are more challanging.

That was the best moment in the game. Unreal never did that much for me. Very nice graphics and sound, some big levels, but it just didn't grab me.

I played A LOT of Q2 online.....I really liked that game for multiplayer. I liked the weapons, the BOOM! of the SS, the RL, the railgun were all good stuff. Some really fun maps for MP inc CTF.
EDIT Forgot to mention the BFG10K!!!!

HL of the same period was a much more enjoyable SP game for me. Much better story (it had one), it drew you in, where the other two did not.

Of all the Unreal games, I like UT original for a MP game. I find it much better than Q3. So far UT 2K4 looks interesting, although I miss the UT weapons. They are weakened in UT 2K3/4.

I still have Q2 on the HD. I wonder what my FPS are these days?? 😛

So what if they are weekend. I hate how everyone hates the lighting gun... It balances out the game!

Sniper Rifle (UT)
-Fast Firing
-Super Zoom
-Perfectly Accurrate
-No bullet lag (You dont have to lead your target)
-Lots of damage

It was unbalanced in my opinion atleast 😛

Yeah, it was the Quad Damage Pack, I still play from time to time. I remember in my Junior year of HS (2 years ago), we'd have the whole (computer servicing) class playing Q2, those were the days...

Unreal--Great game, awesome graphics, awesome Audio using A3D, great Ambience and use of music. Multiplay never really caught on, which is too bad as it was very good on LAN with some nice Maps and Mods(U4E being a favorite).

Q2--Good game, good graphics, ok audio, good ambience

Half Life is better than either, but they both are worthy of play if one hasn't played them before.

I just recently replayed Q2 about a 2 months ago. I think it was a great game in it's day. Unreal was more impressive graphically, but parts of that game stretched out in the middle and were a bit tedious.

I had built up another "junker" box and because many of the parts were older, I had decided to load up Win98 on it for some old school gaming with my 12mb V2 SLI. Q2, GLQuake, and Unreal were natural choices.

Disagree.

I loved Q2, I loved Unreal, thought HL was "ok".

It would be hard for me to pick which I liked better between Q2 and Unreal, I liked them both very much. Unreal did have better graphics.

Unreal was far the superior of the two, and far more groundbreaking for it's time. Not only were the graphics amazing, but alot of the stuff that Half-Life got press for were in Unreal first - scripted sequences, friendly NPCs - these appeared first in Unreal, not Half Life.

Anyway, if you haven't played them, by all means, go back and enjoy these milestones in gaming.
