Count me in as one who loves A.I. It's one of my all time favorite movies. I thought it was brilliant and (for me) very moving and I wished Haley got an Oscar nomination for his work on it. I think he is head and shoulders above all the other "kid" actors. I normally hate watching kids act (see Phantom Menace for an example of bad kid acting) but he is the exception.

I didn't think too much of it. It was just Spielberg pretending he was Kubrick and failing miserably. I didn't hate it, but other than some neato sights and characters, it wasn't much of a movie.

How did he fail? Most of the stuff in this movie was unmodified by Spielberg and was Kubrick's ideas...even the ending!
PROOF Watch the documentaries...it was all inspired by Kubrick

well kubric did pic spielberg to direct the movie since he thought his style wouldn't work for it. i don't think it was all that kubrick like, it has the pace and sort of coldness of a kubrick picture, but u can't say that spielberg was trying to be kubrick, the films his own.

Dvd savants take on it

Another detailed take on it

After watching it, I didn't feel like a saw a movie. I felt wierd and violated...don't know why. I felt like I was walking out of the movie theater with a hangover. Reflecting on it now, I didn't like the movie. The 3 hours came out of no where...there was no new insight that I got from the movie. The boy's ability to "love" seemed like it was in a beta stage; he seemed more like an infatuation robot than a love robot. The only good part of the movie was the little A.I. Bear Toy...PM me when Anand does a review on one of those.

The movie sucked. They took a good premise and made it into a waste of time. Pinocchio was better.

Self-indulgent, pretentious, superficial, kitsch.

All the themes are "skimmed", nothing is truly explored.

Add a dash of "Blade Runner", a bit of "Mad Max", some "Pinocchio" and stir, then keep lukewarm and "Pay it Forward".

Plenty of bad acting - someone said the kid is stuck in a sort of infatuation, I must agree. I have seen kids playing much, much better than Osment. Take for instance "Leon" for a stellar performance by a child actor.

Spielberg is losing his touch, and he's becoming tiresome.

heh wow i actually read through that link:) very informative, shows that anyone saying that kubric would have never tacked on the "unecessary" ending is uninformed since it was there from the start. not to mention that kubric wanted to include it:p i'm starting to think that ppl that keep mentioning kubric don't know what they are saying. its easy to bash spielberg no matter what, ppl either complain that he tried to be kubric or ignored kubric.. hah:p

Good STuff!!!!

<< *warning* spoilers if you haven't seen the film.

Anyway.... I thought the beginning was pretty good, but most of the film after he met Jude Law was pretty dumb IMO (and I like pretty much every movie Jude Law is in). I didn't understand why Jude stuck with the kid for so long, among many other things. The plot got pretty predictable for awhile, however the film totally goes into uncharted territory once he meets the "blue fairy". I liked the whole "aliens trying to understand mankind" thing that was going on there, but the "we can clone someone, but only for a day" concept doesn't make any sense, especially by today's standards. Perhaps 10+ years ago (when Kubrick was toiling with how to make the film) it made more sense, but with our modern knowledge of cloning, that idea is totally bogus. That basically ruined the movie for me. I liked some of the ideas in it, however.

I hope someone can understand my ranting, because I sure can't!

It wasn't cloning - they actually brought her back, not a copy of her. There's a big difference. Besides, that really has very little to do with the point of the movie. I agree that the movie would have been ok without the ending after the manhattan scene, but it works with the ending too...and not just to have a "happy" conclusion - it provided a means for him to "become human" through death. Spielberg's speech about that is pretty insightful.

Got to agree with the above.

Also, the technological part of the movie was laughable at best.

I liked the movie. The movie made a lot of points. Like someone who is not your own child ( a "mecha" that is) could love you more than your own child. The last part of the movie, those WERE aliens. Earth became a frozen wasteland 2000 years after the "boy" got stuck underneath the waters. The aliens were digging up the ice to search for the thing that made human beings so unique, that is the soul. They can ressurect human beings with remnants of their DNA but only for a day, because the aliens pointed out, once the 'space' in the space/time continiuom has been occupied, it can never be replaced.

Its a movie for people who are patient and "listens" to movies. Its not for those whose idea of a good movie are non-stop action sequences.

The last part of the movie, those WERE aliens.

did you read the thread?

how do you explain why an alien looks like the blue fairy? they download him and the rest is virtual. also theres no real indication that they are aliens. u only think that because their 2000+(even more if you start from the present) year tech blows your mind? just look how we've advanced in 100 years. that they sorta look like xfile shaped aliens? if the other parts of the movie were based on rational sci fi why make a stupid jump? chances are real aliens would not be in the same humanoid form as us, not even close. to believe as such is arrogant. the rest of the reasons are in the thread already.

Earth became a frozen wasteland 2000 years after the "boy" got stuck underneath the waters.

why would robots need the same enviroment as humans?

anways, don't take my word for it, spielberg himself said they were advanced ai in the documentary on the 2nd disc of the dvd.

kubric also wanted them to be advanced ai:p look at the kubric faq

my theory on why people are totally wacking out on the ending? too emotional..brains fried..fighting back tears trying to be macho.. i dunno:) just a theory:)

John Williams' score for A.I. is the best of 2001, IMHO. I just got the 2-CD promo score, and it's awesome. w00t! :D:D

As for the movie, Nemesis77's opinion reflects my opinion, although Kubrick DID have the movie's ending in mind when he developed the story.

I know they were mecha, but why were they filled with root beer? ;)

I liked the movie, and didn't have a problem with the heavy distinction between acts, but I have to admit that I feel the "advanced AI" character designers should have done a little more research into biomechanics (as well as how to maintain suspension of disbelief in an audience). For an ending as important as this one, I think I would have tried to have the foresight to avoid any designs that would incline people towards mistaking the future mecha for aliens. You know, for the sake of the story if nothing else. I surmised they were the descendents of mecha, but I was also fairly jarred by the way their surreal appearence seemed to shout, "Hey Mom! Look at what I can do! More is better! Aren't you glad I took 3D rendering classes now?"
