Did you like to throw light bulbs in the street when your were little?

I lived in Hong Kong in the 14th floor of an apartment building. Me and brother used to throw eggs and soaked toilet paper at the people down the street. There were taxi drivers washing their car, and we would try to aim at their cars with soaked toilet paper. It pissed the fvck out of everyone in the street, it's mad.

Vacuum tubes were more fun.

Spilling iced tea on a HF amp right across a pair of 5R4GYB rectifiers (BIG tube although no Eimac Final) that were glowing blue under load and hearing the pop-pop like a .40 going off in the room is terrifying. Bulbs are nice but remember the glass cuts so if someone is walking where you're throwing this is not nice.

heh heh, within the last couple of years, there have been several times that I've done that with burnt out lightbulbs - at an unexpecting coworker's feet 😛 🙂 Always good for a laugh. The best one, though, was when a coworker was changing 4 foot fluorescent bulbs. Just as he finished putting in the second bulb and stepped off the ladder, I slid a book across the floor, taking out the bottom of one of the bulbs he had leaning against the wall. The bulb smashed flatly against the floor, making quite a loud sound. The look on my coworker's face and the way his body distorted at the surprise was priceless... well worth sweeping up a little bit of glass.

yay! minerva is back!

Oh I've been around just lurking and watching over everyone much like a scientist scrutinizes microbial activity in a drop of water through a microscope. 😛

Sword fights with flourescents FTW!

Only if there is a powerful energy field nearby that makes them glow at full power! Feel the force. Put thimbles on your finger tips and shoot sparks at your opponent. It will probably shorten your life and terminate your ability to reproduce but if you're having fun it could be worth it. 😉

Especially the ones that release black smoke when they pop. The smell is awful though. Could it be the selenium? Makes even the toughest soldier cry and barf. In Iraq these would be local WMD's. 😉

Did they ever catch that Brooklyn boy that dropped the the frozen turkey off the Verrazano and hit your ship? Or was that someone else?

(yet another weird technical post by minerva)

😀 Tossing burned out light bulbs is technical? I suppose we could make an experiment over it starting with Newton's equations. 😉

Dear Lord! That's a great story but could have ended up in disaster if the poor fella jumped and fell off the ladder and fell into the glass! :Q

2. I'm pretty sure that light bulbs have been filled with inert gas for a long long time.

No they are filled with inert gas to slow the deterioration of the filament but the pressure is lower than the outside atmosphere so the inward rupture of the envelope is gentle creating a pop as the glass fragments fall to the surrounding ground creating their own naturally syncopated rings like a squirrel's last breath after it meets its demise with a michelin.
Much more soothing than the loud and sharp WAP! of a 32" WEGA tube imploding sending shards inward to the yoke at great speed. The aperture grille's tinny ticking a few moments later is intriguing as the fact that pops will be getting the news from the wireless instead. -M

WTF???

Who told you that?

Yep.

but what was even better was hitting golf balls into a busy intersection with a tennis racket.

or filling a coke bottle with gas and a rag, lighting and then taking a shotgun to it.

still surprised I'm alive.

Yup, and glass bottles. And things on fire. And firecrackers. And a BUNCH of other crap that didn't belong in the street.
