Another thread got me curious. Did you leave your house for good when you turned 18 or thereabout?

No.

At 18, I went away to school but came back for summers, winters and vacations.
At 21, I went to grad school and lived near campus but came home for summers, winters and vacations.
At 23, I lived at home and worked and saved money.
At 26, I moved out.
At 29, I moved back home while I worked at a startup.
At 30, I moved out for good.

Technically, no, but I answered yes anyway. At 18, I went away to college about 4 hours away. I only ever saw my parents during my month off during Xmas, and for the 3 months of summer. So I was away from home 8/12 months a year from age 18-22, then right after I graduated, I moved 3 hours away to a different state, living on my own.

I left at 2yo. My mom wrote our telephone number on the back of my shirt in case I didn't find my way back home.

No, at 18 I graduated high school and went to a local community college for two years while I lived at home and worked. At 20, I moved away to go to a university for three years. After I graduated at 23, I moved back home while I looked for jobs, and ended up getting one in town where I was living so I stayed home until I was 25 when I moved out and got an apartment with a buddy. Since then I've been living on my own except for about a year when I lost a job.

At 18 I went to university, came home for occasional weekends, summers, and holidays.
At 21 I started working full time & lived on my own. So I guess 21.

I left at 17.

A friend's parents took me in for the 6 months until I graduated HS.

I didn't speak with my parents for a while, but we've since overcome our differences.

Well, sort of. Left at 18 to go to college although I routinely went back to moms house. And technically my official address was her place. Came back for roughly 1.5 yrs when I graduated since I had no job and no means to support living alone. Was lucky enough to get a full time job a month after graduating, and just used the rest of the time to pay down debts so I could more easily move out.

More like blackdogdeek, I was in and out of the house from the age of 17 to about 25 and then I moved out for good.

No.
Commuted to college 4-1/2 years from home.
Worked two years, living at home. First job didn't pan out. Second one did. Saved money.
At 24 I moved out and never returned.

That was good of you

Yeah, he was worried he wouldn't be able to make the drive back from the chemo place (about an hour away) after getting it. It turned out, he likely could have, as they put steroids and such in it so you don't get sick right away, but still, he ended up not able to do much of anything after awhile.

This is the more traditional story I expected. Surprised to see nearly 50% leave home for good at 18. How do you survive paying your own living expenses and still save enough for college/your first place? Did you have to go to near 30 to get out from under debt? And by debt I don't mean a mortgage.

i left to college at 17, moved back home for summers and breaks. when i graduated i was 22 and lived at home until i was 25, and my girlfriend moved in with me at the time for like 6 months, then we got an apartment together for 6 years and we got married while living there. we bought our first house 2 years ago.
