Did you know the Orange, Grapefruit, and Tangelo are hybrids of the 2 same fruit?

This is intersting fact, but in reality the Orange, Grapefruit, and Tangelo are hybrids of different amounts of 2 fruits. The Mandarin and Pomelo. It isn't a 50-50 hybrid of the two, but it is a hybrid of the two.

Infact all common cirtrus are hybrids of 4 actual species:
Mandarin, Key Lime, Citron, and Pomelo.

Just wanted to post this interesting fact for you people.

Thanks! Very interesting.

But I went looking up the parentage of the lemon, and it looks like you missed one. Please don't think I'm bitter, but it is. 😛

Even stranger--
Kale, collard greens, cauliflower, cabbage, brussels sprouts, and broccoli are all the same species, Brassica oleracea.

And all dog species can be traced back to three wolves, and all cat species can traced back to 2 Tigers. Or something like that.

I know that fact long ago, because we had an orange orchard for 5 generations. However, orange has been around for 4500 years so the origin of it is unknown.

Genetics tell us very clearly that the orange is a hybrid. The fact that oranges do not occure naturally in the wild tells us that it is a man made hybrid. People in South East Asia or China created the orange from the Pomelo and Mandarin around 4500 years ago. The only thing we don't know is the exact time, place, and people who created the orange. So in a sense yes, we don't know fully were they came from.

Actually the Bitter Orange is a hybrid too of the ones I listed, its scientific name is Citrus × aurantium. It is a hybrid of a Pomelo and Mandrin too, just like the sweet orange.

Some would even argue that all Citrus and likely even the Kumquats should all be considured a single species since they Hybridize so easily with each other. Maybe Citrus Citrus.

I love food and the history of food just makes it all the more intriguing. While I did know this stuff about our citruses, thanks for sharing with everyone!
