Did you know that the fastest way from California to Oregon is through Kentucky?

Neither did I!

But it must be!

EDIT: Update on post #22

It is indeed the fastest, most efficient way to to get your package to you on time.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Worldport_(UPS_air_hub)

There are a few other packages to consider, as well.

It amazes me that we still get these posts.

The thing is, I worked for UPS until earlier this year. At PDX we have non-stop air flights from LAX/Ontario to PDX. It could have just been put on one of those! This really didn't need to hop on THAT plane at all. And ground (via train) takes 20-26 hours from point to point. This even could have been ground shipping.

Wow, another person who does not understand palletization. :\
Hey, his package isn't like yours. It's special. It has its own concierge and handmaiden, not to mention a throng of courtesans to throw flowers down as it passes. And it goddamn does not need to go through Kentucky to get to him. How dare you imply that his package is no better than anyone else's?

Again, one word - palletization.

You worked for UPS, and you don't know how this works? :hmm:

I don't think you really know UPS's methods. They moved away from that and made their shipping structure COMPLETELY modular. As in, each package has a unique identifier, is calculated for the most efficient route (sometimes) and is processed as such.

Seeing UPS Freight (commercial/industrial shipping) however, ugh...

You want to really blow your mind do a trace route to your friend's computer who lives across the street from you!

Unless someone has found a deterministic solution to the traveling salesman problem that doesn't take O(n!) complexity and thus a reaallllly long time to compute for millions of packages and destinations, then the heuristics will have to be good enough. Plus, you're not special.

I know enough about it to know that if I choose "2 Day Air", there is a high probability that the package will be routed through their Louisville cargo hub. Much the same way as a two day package from Fedex will go through their Memphis cargo hub.

Amazon goes direct and has better prices than Newegg. They are also a more profitable company.

Do you guys have any fucking clue how expensive jet fuel is?

Logistics!

Nope, logistics cannot possibly work out the complicated route of any package.

To the untrained eye it seems random but to a trained eye... it's random.

Somewhere along the line they said "fuck logistics" and went with a path that in the end will be more expensive but over a longer period of time which makes it seem less expensive.

I am not shitting you, sometimes it works that way (spent a few summers directing packages per extremely strange routes).

all i know is i couldnt get a 5lb box halfway across the country in 3 days for $5 so they must be doing something right.

Absolute proof they fucked up on this. This was supposed to be delivered today. Unless it is at the Portland UPS hub by 0330 (23 minutes from now) it will not be sorted and loaded onto a truck.

I have an Amazon Prime order that shipped via ground from socal and will be here today. Fuck UPS.

I wish I had the good sense to take pictures of all those schools & churches I helped built in Europe. Then I could post them here and call you a beautiful being.

As such, I will only call you a butt muncher.

And I still will not delete you from my friends list. You can do better than this!
